What is Google Pay?

Google Pay lets people pay with a credit or debit card saved to their Google Account, including cards they’ve used on Google Play, YouTube or in Chrome. Online it works on Android phones and in Chrome and other supported browsers. For your business it’s a card payment, so it pays out and refunds like one, in the currencies Stripe supports for cards.

How your customers pay

  1. A Google Pay button at checkout

When a customer with a card in their Google Account checks out from your website, Stripe Checkout shows a Google Pay button alongside the card form.

  2. Pick a saved card

Tapping it opens Google’s payment sheet with the cards they’ve saved. They choose one, with the order total shown before they pay.

  3. Confirm it’s really them

Google may ask them to verify, for example by unlocking their phone or entering the card’s security code. Google decides which check to use.

  4. Order confirmed

The payment goes through as a card payment, the customer returns to your order confirmation page, and you both get an order email.

Why offer it

Why businesses take Google Pay

  • Covers the shoppers Apple Pay misses

Apple Pay only appears on Apple devices. Google Pay covers Android phones and Chrome on Windows and Mac, so with both turned on most phone shoppers see a one-tap option.

  • Good for small, frequent orders

A weekly meal-prep order or a bag of loose-leaf tea shouldn’t take five minutes to pay for. A saved card turns a small, regular purchase into a quick one.

  • No code and no domain files

Stripe hosts the checkout page, so there’s nothing to register on your own domain and no code to add. Turning Google Pay on in your Stripe payment method settings is enough.

  • Renewals without retyping

Google Pay works for subscriptions in Stripe Checkout. A dog-walking package billed monthly on the Growth plan renews without the customer typing their card again.

Set up

Turn on Google Pay in three steps.

  1. Connect your Stripe account

Link the Stripe account you already have, or create one in a few minutes from Cornerrr. Payments go straight to it; Cornerrr adds no transaction fee.

  2. Turn the method on in Stripe

In your Stripe Dashboard, open the payment method settings and turn it on. Stripe may ask a few questions about your business first.

  3. It shows at checkout

Your Cornerrr checkout is Stripe Checkout, so customers who can use the method see it automatically when their country and your currency match.

Questions

Good to know

How do I add Google Pay to my website?

With Cornerrr there’s nothing to install. Connect your Stripe account, check that Google Pay is on in your Stripe Dashboard’s payment method settings, and Cornerrr’s Stripe Checkout shows it to customers who can use it.

Why do some customers see Google Pay and others don’t?

The button only shows when the customer’s phone or browser supports Google Pay and they have a card saved to their Google Account. Everyone else sees the card form and the other methods you’ve turned on.

Can Google Pay be used for subscriptions?

Yes. Stripe Checkout accepts Google Pay for subscriptions, which on Cornerrr need the Growth plan. Stripe charges each renewal automatically.

How are Google Pay refunds handled?

Just like a card refund. You refund through Stripe, in full or in part, the money returns to the card the customer chose in Google Pay, and your store sends a refund email.

Is Google Pay available in my country?

Almost certainly. Stripe offers Google Pay to businesses and customers worldwide except India, though Google decides which countries and cards its wallet supports.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
