Buy now, pay later
What is Klarna?
Klarna is a buy now, pay later service. At checkout the customer chooses from the options Klarna offers them, which can include paying in full, paying in 30 days, splitting the cost into 3 or 4 interest-free payments, or longer financing that may charge interest. Klarna decides who can use it and collects the repayments, and you receive the full amount minus fees. Through Stripe it’s for businesses in the US, the UK, Switzerland, Norway and most of the EU, selling to consumers.
How your customers pay
Klarna at checkout
On Stripe Checkout the customer chooses Klarna. It only shows when their country and your store’s currency fit what Klarna supports.
Choose how to pay
They’re sent to Klarna, which shows the options open to them for their country and order size, such as pay in 30 days or pay in 3 or 4.
Klarna decides
Klarna approves or declines the purchase. If it declines, the customer can go back to checkout and pay another way.
You’re paid, they repay Klarna
Once approved, the customer returns to your order confirmation page. You receive the full amount in your Stripe balance and the customer repays Klarna directly. If they don’t repay, that’s Klarna’s loss, not yours.
Why offer it
Why businesses take Klarna
Bigger purchases feel possible
Splitting the cost of a sofa, a bridal dress or an e-bike into smaller payments lets more customers say yes to something they’d otherwise save up for.
No chasing installments
Klarna carries the repayment risk. You’re paid upfront and Klarna collects the installments, so a late payer is never your problem.
Expected in much of Europe
In countries such as Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands, many online shoppers look for Klarna at checkout, so offering it can make a small shop feel as easy to buy from as a big one.
Works with some subscriptions
Klarna can pay for subscriptions in Stripe Checkout in many countries, mostly as pay in full. Pay later for subscriptions is only offered in Germany, Sweden and the US.
Set up
Turn on Klarna in three steps.
Connect your Stripe account
Link the Stripe account you already have, or create one in a few minutes from Cornerrr. Payments go straight to it; Cornerrr adds no transaction fee.
Turn the method on in Stripe
In your Stripe Dashboard, open the payment method settings and turn it on. Stripe may ask a few questions about your business first.
It shows at checkout
Your Cornerrr checkout is Stripe Checkout, so customers who can use the method see it automatically when their country and your currency match.
Questions
Good to know
How do I accept Klarna payments on my Cornerrr website?
Connect your Stripe account and turn on Klarna in your Stripe Dashboard’s payment method settings. Cornerrr’s Stripe Checkout then shows Klarna to eligible customers automatically, when their country and your store’s currency match what Klarna supports.
Will Klarna approve all my customers?
No. Klarna decides who can use it for each purchase and which options to offer. Customers it declines can still pay by card or another method on the same checkout.
Can I use Klarna for subscriptions?
Yes, in many countries. Klarna works with subscriptions in Stripe Checkout, which need the Growth plan on Cornerrr, but it offers fewer options for recurring payments, often only paying in full.
How do refunds work with Klarna?
Refund through Stripe, in full or in part, up to 180 days after the payment, and your store emails the customer. Klarna cancels any installments still to come and returns what the customer already paid. A payment that has become a dispute can’t be refunded.
Can I sell to businesses or charge extra with Klarna?
No to both. Klarna doesn’t allow business-to-business sales, and its rules don’t let you charge more for Klarna purchases. In the UK, only promote Klarna with wording Klarna has approved.
Do I need any technical skills?
No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.
How much does it cost?
Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
