Payments

How people in the United States pay online.

Americans pay online mostly by credit or debit card, and many tap Apple Pay or Google Pay on their phone instead of typing a card number. Amazon Pay and Cash App Pay let people check out with accounts they already have, Affirm, Afterpay and Klarna split bigger purchases into installments, and ACH Direct Debit suits invoices and regular business payments. PayPal is common too, but it isn’t available through Cornerrr’s checkout today.

Before you start

Selling online in the United States: what to know.

  1. There’s no national sales tax

The US has no federal sales tax. 45 states and Washington, DC charge a statewide sales tax, cities and counties can add their own, and Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax (Alaska allows local ones). Rates often depend on the delivery address, down to the city.

  2. Know where you have nexus

You collect sales tax where you have nexus: a physical presence such as your home, studio or stock, or enough sales into a state. Since the Supreme Court’s South Dakota v. Wayfair decision in 2018, every state with a sales tax sets an economic nexus threshold, most often $100,000 of sales a year, and higher in a few, such as California’s $500,000.

  3. Register before you collect

Get a sales tax permit from each state where you have nexus before you charge tax, starting with your home state, and file returns on the schedule it gives you. Many cities and counties also ask for a general business license. Your state’s revenue department lists what applies to you.

  4. Let Stripe Tax do the math

On any paid plan, Stripe Tax can work out the sales tax for each order at checkout from the delivery address, in the states where you’ve added your registration. Its threshold monitoring shows where your sales are getting close to a state’s limit. Deciding where to register is still yours, ideally with an accountant.

  5. Ship when you say you will

The FTC’s Mail Order Rule asks you to ship within the time you state, or within 30 days if you state none. If you can’t, tell the customer and let them cancel for a full refund. Put your processing times on your shipping page and on made-to-order products.

  6. Post a privacy policy and a refund policy

There’s no single federal privacy law, but California’s online privacy law (CalOPPA) expects any website that collects personal information from California residents to post a privacy policy, and several states have broader privacy laws for larger businesses. Returns follow your own written policy. Cornerrr’s AI drafts both pages for you to review.

  7. Make the site easy for everyone to use

Accessibility lawsuits over business websites are common in the US, and the WCAG guidelines are the usual yardstick. Write alt text for every photo (the AI can draft it), use clear headings and strong color contrast, and never put key details only inside an image. That’s good practice, not a legal sign-off.

General information, current as of October 2026, not legal or tax advice. Rules and rates change, so check them with an accountant or adviser, or the official sources, before you rely on them.

Cornerrr

Built for businesses in the United States

  • Prices in USD

Set your store’s currency to USD and your products, shipping rates and checkout use it. Cornerrr works with about 140 currencies, one per web address.

  • Sales tax at checkout

Turn on Stripe Tax in your Stripe account and Cornerrr asks it to work out sales tax for each order at checkout, on any paid plan.

  • Words written for your customers

Describe your business and Cornerrr writes every page in plain American English, then you change anything by asking.

  • Local ways to pay

Checkout is Stripe’s own, so the local payment methods you turn on in Stripe show up for the customers who can use them, next to cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Local tips

Make it feel local

  • Say how fast you ship, and where

Shoppers look for delivery times before they buy. State your processing time, your carrier and whether you ship to Alaska, Hawaii and PO boxes. When you add a USPS, UPS or FedEx tracking number to an order, your customer gets a shipping email with a tracking link.

  • Be careful with “Made in USA”

Under the FTC’s rule, a plain “Made in USA” claim means all or virtually all of the product is made in the US. If you use imported parts or blanks, qualify it, for example “assembled in Ohio from imported parts”, or describe what you make locally.

  • Get found in your city and state

Most small-business searches include a place. Put your city and state in your page titles and your About page, say which states you ship to or which area you serve, and link your website from your Google Business Profile.

  • Offer installments on bigger orders

Affirm, Afterpay and Klarna let customers pay over time while Stripe pays you upfront. Turn them on in your Stripe Dashboard and they show at checkout when the customer and the order qualify. They suit furniture, art, equipment and other larger purchases.

How it works

From a few words to your website, live.

  1. Step 1: Describe your business

A sentence or two is enough: what you do, who it’s for and how people buy from you.

  2. Step 2: We build it while you watch

Cornerrr writes your pages, adds your products or services, and picks the colours, fonts and look. It takes about a minute.

  3. Step 3: Connect payments

Link a Stripe account, or create one in a few minutes. Your customers pay you directly.

  4. Step 4: You’re live

Publish on your free Cornerrr web address, or use your own. Change anything later by asking.

Questions

Good to know

Do I have to charge sales tax on online orders?

Usually in your home state, and in any other state where you have a physical presence or where your sales pass its economic nexus threshold. Thresholds and rules differ by state, so check with your state revenue department or an accountant. This is general information, not tax advice.

Which payment methods can my US store take?

Cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay, Cash App Pay, Affirm, Afterpay, Klarna and ACH Direct Debit, whichever you turn on in your Stripe Dashboard. PayPal isn’t available through Cornerrr’s checkout today, so name the methods you do take on your FAQ page.

Is my website accessible enough for the ADA?

No website builder can promise that. Cornerrr builds clean pages that work on phones and can draft alt text for your photos, but accessibility also depends on your words, images and colors. Use the WCAG guidelines as a checklist and ask an expert if you’re unsure.

What do I need to start selling?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live you pick a paid plan and connect your own Stripe account (or create one in a few minutes), and Cornerrr adds no transaction fee on top of Stripe’s. Your own domain and Stripe Tax come with any paid plan.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
