Cornerrr in Portugal
Describe your business in Portuguese and Cornerrr writes your loja online in Portuguese: products, pages, a request form and a Stripe checkout in euros. Below: how people in Portugal pay and the Portuguese rules a small shop should know.
Payments
MB WAY is Portugal’s everyday payment app: customers enter their phone number and confirm the payment in the app. Multibanco references are still used by people who prefer to pay at an ATM or in online banking, though the order is only paid once they do, which can take a few days. Cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay cover the rest, and Klarna lets customers spread larger purchases.
Before you start
Businesses that sell online in Portugal must join the Livro de Reclamações Eletrónico and show a visible link to it, usually the official logo, on their website. Add it to your footer or Contact page.
Standard IVA is 23% on the mainland, 22% in Madeira and 16% in the Azores. With annual turnover up to €15,000, the article 53 exemption lets you charge no IVA. Your contabilista can confirm whether you qualify.
Portuguese invoices generally come from invoicing software certified by the tax authority (AT), with its codes and a QR code, and many customers ask for their NIF on the invoice. Ask your contabilista how to invoice website orders.
Portuguese law asks you to tell consumers which alternative dispute resolution center they can turn to, with its website, on your site and in your terms. Many small shops name the arbitration center of their region.
Consumers have 14 days from delivery to cancel, and you refund within 14 days. Give the cancellation information and model form before they buy. EU rules from 19 June 2026 add an online withdrawal function; Cornerrr adds one to your store’s footer and emails the customer an acknowledgement of receipt; mention it in your cancellation information.
Information for consumers in Portugal, such as product descriptions, prices and terms, has to be in Portuguese. Describe your shop in Portuguese from the start.
GDPR applies, overseen by the CNPD. Publish a privacy policy that names the services you use, such as Stripe, and ask only for what you need. Cornerrr’s AI drafts one for you to review.
General information, current as of October 2026, not legal or tax advice. Rules and rates change, so check them with an accountant or adviser, or the official sources, before you rely on them.
Cornerrr
Set your store’s currency to EUR and your products, shipping rates and checkout use it. Cornerrr works with about 140 currencies, one per web address.
Turn on Stripe Tax in your Stripe account and Cornerrr asks it to work out VAT for each order at checkout, on any paid plan. You can collect business customers’ VAT numbers too.
Describe your business in Portuguese and Cornerrr writes your pages in Portuguese. Stripe Checkout shows in Portuguese too. A few built-in cart and account labels are still in English today.
Checkout is Stripe’s own, so the local payment methods you turn on in Stripe show up for the customers who can use them, next to cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay.
Local tips
CTT is the usual choice for small parcels, with DPD and GLS for faster delivery. Say what delivery costs and how long it takes to Madeira and the Azores, which are further away and slower.
A Multibanco order is only paid when the customer pays the reference, which can take a few days. Check that the payment shows as paid in Stripe before you pack the order.
Customers notice Brazilian spellings and words. Describe your business in European Portuguese, read every page through, and ask the assistant to change anything that sounds Brazilian.
Mention MB WAY on your payment page and in your FAQ. Shoppers on a phone are used to paying with it, and knowing it’s there makes a new shop feel familiar.
