What is Credit and debit cards?
Credit and debit cards are linked to a customer’s bank or card account. Online, the customer types the card number, expiry date and security code, and the card network and their bank approve or decline the payment in seconds. Stripe takes Visa, Mastercard and American Express in nearly every country it works in, and Discover, JCB and UnionPay in many of them.
How your customers pay
Checkout on Stripe’s page
The customer clicks checkout on your website and lands on Stripe Checkout, a secure page hosted by Stripe that shows the order and the total, in their own language for about 40 languages.
Card details, typed once
They type the card number, expiry date, security code and billing address. Your checkout asks for a billing address on every order, so you always know who paid.
A bank check when the bank asks for one
In Europe and some other places the customer’s bank may ask them to confirm the payment in their banking app or with a code. This is 3D Secure, and Stripe Checkout handles it for you.
Paid, confirmed, emailed
Once the payment goes through, the customer sees your order confirmation page and gets an order email from your store. You get an email too, and the order appears in your Orders list.
Why offer it
Why businesses take Credit and debit cards
Nobody has to sign up for anything
A card needs no app, no wallet and no approval. That matters for older customers, for someone buying a one-off gift, and for any first order from a stranger who found you in a search.
Card numbers never touch your website
Customers type their card into Stripe’s page, not yours, so you never see or store card numbers. The hardest part of payment security stays with Stripe.
The backbone of subscriptions
A saved card can be charged again automatically, which is what weekly boxes and monthly memberships on the Growth plan run on. Customers see their subscriptions in their account.
Payments land in your own account
Card payments go to your Stripe account and pay out to your bank on Stripe’s schedule. Stripe’s card fees apply (see Stripe’s pricing page), and Cornerrr adds no transaction fee of its own.
Set up
Turn on Credit and debit cards in three steps.
Connect your Stripe account
Link the Stripe account you already have, or create one in a few minutes from Cornerrr. Payments go straight to it; Cornerrr adds no transaction fee.
Turn the method on in Stripe
In your Stripe Dashboard, open the payment method settings and turn it on. Stripe may ask a few questions about your business first.
It shows at checkout
Your Cornerrr checkout is Stripe Checkout, so customers who can use the method see it automatically when their country and your currency match.
Questions
Good to know
How do I accept credit card payments on my website?
Connect your Stripe account to Cornerrr, or create one in a few minutes. Cards are on by default in Stripe, so your checkout takes them once Stripe has activated your account and your website is live on a paid plan.
Do I need a merchant account to take cards online?
Not a separate one. Your Stripe account does that job: Stripe processes the card payment and pays the money out to your bank account, so there’s no extra contract with a bank to sign.
Can I take card payments for subscriptions?
Yes. On the Growth plan a product can be a subscription billed every week, month or year, and Stripe charges the card automatically each time. Customers see their subscriptions in their account.
How do card refunds work?
You refund through Stripe, in full or in part, and your customer gets a refund email from your store. The money usually shows on their statement within 5–10 business days, depending on their bank. Stripe doesn’t give back its original processing fee on a refund.
What happens if a customer disputes a card payment?
The cardholder’s bank opens a dispute (a chargeback) and Stripe emails you. You answer with evidence in your Stripe Dashboard, such as the tracking number and the order email. Clear product pages and a visible refund policy make disputes less likely.
Do I need any technical skills?
No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.
How much does it cost?
Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
