What is ACH Direct Debit?

ACH Direct Debit pulls a payment from the customer’s US bank account over the ACH network. The customer connects their account, usually by signing in to their bank through Stripe, and authorizes the debit. It is a delayed payment: Stripe confirms success after up to four business days, so the order waits until then.

How your customers pay

  1. Choose to pay by bank account

At your Stripe checkout, in US dollars, the customer chooses to pay with their US bank account.

  2. Connect the bank

Most customers sign in to their bank through Stripe to link the account at once. Others type their routing and account numbers and confirm Stripe’s microdeposits within 10 days.

  3. Authorize the debit

Checkout shows the authorization text and records the customer’s agreement, and Stripe emails them a copy.

  4. Wait for it to clear

The payment is confirmed within about four business days. Cornerrr then marks the order paid, lowers stock and sends the confirmation.

Why offer it

Why businesses take ACH Direct Debit

  • Suited to monthly bills

Bookkeeping, lawn care or water delivery plans can be debited automatically on the Growth plan, from an account that doesn’t expire like a card.

  • Good for larger payments

Stripe notes that ACH is popular for large or recurring payments, such as a quarterly service plan or a wholesale order.

  • Checked bank accounts

Stripe verifies the account before debiting it, through the bank sign-in or microdeposits, which helps cut failed payments and fraud.

  • Faster settlement if eligible

Eligible US businesses can switch on two-day settlement in Stripe’s payment method settings instead of the standard four days.

  2. Turn the method on in Stripe

In your Stripe Dashboard, open the payment method settings and turn it on. Stripe may ask a few questions about your business first.

  3. It shows at checkout

Your Cornerrr checkout is Stripe Checkout, so customers who can use the method see it automatically when their country and your currency match.

Questions

Good to know

How do I accept ACH payments on my Cornerrr website?

Connect your Stripe account and turn on ACH Direct Debit in your Stripe Dashboard’s payment method settings. With your store in US dollars, Cornerrr’s Stripe Checkout offers it to eligible US customers automatically, for one-time orders and subscriptions.

How long does an ACH payment take to confirm?

Up to four business days, or about two for businesses using faster settlement. The order stays pending in Cornerrr until then, so wait for the paid status before you ship or start the work. If the debit fails, the order is marked unpaid and you are emailed.

Can I use ACH for subscriptions?

Yes. On the Growth plan the customer authorizes once at the first checkout, and Stripe debits each renewal from the same bank account.

Can a customer reverse an ACH payment?

Yes. People can dispute a debit through their bank for up to 60 days on a personal account, or two business days on a business account, and these disputes are final. You can refund for up to 180 days; let the customer know when you do, so they don’t dispute it too.

Is there a faster way for US customers to pay by bank?

Stripe also offers instant bank payments through Link, which confirm straight away instead of after several days. Stripe says ACH Direct Debit costs less but takes longer, so it can make sense to keep both on.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
