Step by step

How to sell art prints online in 6 steps.

  1. Use sizes that fit standard frames

Buyers want a print they can frame without a custom order. Offer standard sizes as options (8×10, 11×14 and 16×20 inches in the US; A4, A3 and A2 in Europe), and give both the image size and the border.

  2. Say what it’s printed on

Name the method, the inks and the paper. “Giclée with archival pigment inks on cotton rag paper” tells a collector far more than “high-quality print”.

  3. Keep open and limited editions apart

Open editions can be reprinted; limited editions can’t. Give each limited edition its own product with stock equal to the edition size, and say whether it’s signed and numbered.

  4. Show the real print, not only a mockup

Room mockups help people picture the size, but add a real photo of the print that shows the paper and the signature. Mention that colors vary a little from screen to screen.

  5. Pack flat or rolled, and say which

Small prints travel flat between card in a rigid mailer; large ones go rolled in tissue inside a sturdy tube. Say how each size ships, and set fixed rates that cover the packaging.

  6. Open commissions when you have room

Pet portraits, house portraits and other custom pieces can be “price on request”. Ask for the subject, size and deadline in the form, and say on the page when you next have openings.

Built in

A shop made for art prints, not a blank template.

  • Sizes and papers as options

Each print can have sizes, papers, or framed and unframed as options, each with its own price, SKU and stock, so an edition of fifty stops at fifty.

  • Commissions in your Inbox

Commission pages hide the price and cart button. Customers send the subject, size and date, the request lands in your Inbox, and you reply with a quote by email.

  • Shipping rates by size

Set up to five fixed shipping rates per currency, for example flat mailers and tubes, with the countries you ship to and a delivery estimate for each.

  • An About page in your words

Cornerrr writes your About page and print descriptions from what you tell it, and you can ask the assistant to rewrite them closer to how you talk about your work.

Good to know

  • Limited edition disclosures

Some US states have disclosure laws for limited-edition prints, covering facts such as the edition size, how the print was made and whether the edition is closed. Put those facts on every limited-edition page wherever you sell; collectors expect them.

  • Your art, your prints

Prints of your own artwork are yours to sell. Prints of characters, logos, or paintings made from someone else’s photo need permission, so paint from reference photos you took or have a license for.

  • Price each size on its own

Add up the print, sleeve, backing board, mailer or tube and your time for each size. Large prints cost far more to pack and ship than small ones, so don’t scale prices by area alone.

General information to help you get started, not legal advice. Rules differ by country, state and product, so check the ones that apply to you.

  3. Step 3: Connect payments

Link a Stripe account, or create one in a few minutes. Your customers pay you directly.

  4. Step 4: You’re live

Questions

Good to know

What size art prints sell best online?

Standard frame sizes sell most easily, because buyers can frame them the same day. Start with two or three sizes, see which sell, and add more. On Cornerrr every size is an option with its own price and stock on the same page.

Should I ship art prints flat or rolled?

Flat suits small and medium prints, in a rigid mailer with card on both sides. Large prints usually go rolled in tissue inside a strong tube. Say which on each product, so buyers know to let a rolled print relax before framing.

Do I need a business license to sell my art prints?

Many places ask anyone who sells regularly to register a business, and you may need to collect sales tax or VAT. Check with your city, state or local tax office. On Cornerrr, Stripe Tax can work out the tax at checkout once you turn it on.

Can I sell prints and originals on the same website?

Yes. Make each original its own product with a stock of one, so nobody else can buy it once it’s gone, and mention the prints of the same piece in its description.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
