Payments

How people in Malta pay online.

Cards are the usual way to pay online in Malta, and Apple Pay and Google Pay are common on phones. Many people in Malta also bank with Revolut, so Revolut Pay is worth turning on, and SEPA Direct Debit suits regular payments from a Maltese or other euro bank account. Klarna isn’t offered to customers in Malta through Stripe, so cards and wallets do most of the work.

Before you start

Selling online in Malta: what to know.

  1. VAT: Article 10 or Article 11

Standard VAT is 18%. Small businesses with turnover up to €35,000 a year can register under Article 11 and charge no VAT; others register under Article 10 and charge it. The Malta Tax and Customs Administration (MTCA) explains which applies.

  2. Selling to Italy and the rest of the EU

Once your sales to consumers in other EU countries pass €10,000 a year in total, you charge their VAT rate, 22% in Italy for example, and can declare it through the One-Stop Shop in your Maltese return.

  3. 14 days to change their mind

Consumers have 14 days from delivery to withdraw and get their money back within 14 days; the MCCAA handles consumer complaints. Since 19 June 2026 EU rules also expect an online withdrawal function; Cornerrr adds one to your store’s footer and emails the customer an acknowledgement of receipt; mention it in your terms.

  4. Business details on the site

Show your business name, address, email and VAT number, and for companies the registration number from the Malta Business Registry. Your Contact page or footer is the natural place.

  5. GDPR and the IDPC

GDPR applies, overseen by the Information and Data Protection Commissioner (IDPC). Publish a privacy policy that names the services you use, such as Stripe. Cornerrr’s AI drafts one for you to review.

General information, current as of October 2026, not legal or tax advice. Rules and rates change, so check them with an accountant or adviser, or the official sources, before you rely on them.

Cornerrr

Built for businesses in Malta

  • Prices in euros

Set your store’s currency to EUR and your products, shipping rates and checkout use it. Cornerrr works with about 140 currencies, one per web address.

  • VAT at checkout

Turn on Stripe Tax in your Stripe account and Cornerrr asks it to work out VAT for each order at checkout, on any paid plan. You can collect business customers’ VAT numbers too.

  • Words written for your customers

Describe your business and Cornerrr writes every page in plain American English, then you change anything by asking.

  • Local ways to pay

Checkout is Stripe’s own, so the local payment methods you turn on in Stripe show up for the customers who can use them, next to cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Local tips

Make it feel local

  • Name your rates for Malta and Gozo

Gozo deliveries often take a day longer. Name your fixed rates clearly, such as “Malta” and “Gozo”, with a delivery estimate each; every rate is shown at checkout, so customers pick the one for their address.

  • Make local delivery your edge

Many shoppers in Malta order from abroad and wait longer for parcels. If you deliver in a day or two from a Maltese address, put that promise on your home page.

  • English for reach, Maltese for warmth

English is an official language and most online shops in Malta use it. A Maltese name, greeting or product line can still make your shop feel local; Cornerrr writes one language per website, so choose your main one.

  • Use MaltaPost or a courier

MaltaPost delivers most small parcels, and couriers such as DHL cover express delivery. When you add a DHL tracking number to an order, the shipping email links straight to tracking.

How it works

From a few words to your website, live.

  1. Step 1: Describe your business

A sentence or two is enough: what you do, who it’s for and how people buy from you.

  2. Step 2: We build it while you watch

Cornerrr writes your pages, adds your products or services, and picks the colours, fonts and look. It takes about a minute.

  3. Step 3: Connect payments

Link a Stripe account, or create one in a few minutes. Your customers pay you directly.

  4. Step 4: You’re live

Publish on your free Cornerrr web address, or use your own. Change anything later by asking.

Questions

Good to know

Can my website be in Maltese?

Cornerrr writes the website in the language you describe your business in, so you can try Maltese and edit anything that reads wrong. Most Maltese shops write in English, which reaches residents, expats and visitors. A few built-in cart and account labels are in English either way, and the add-to-cart and checkout buttons can be renamed.

Do I need to charge VAT as a small business in Malta?

Not if you’re registered under Article 11, for turnover up to €35,000 a year. Under Article 10 you charge 18% (or a reduced rate), and Stripe Tax can work it out at checkout on any paid plan. This is general information; check with the MTCA or your accountant.

Can I deliver to Gozo?

Yes. Add a fixed rate named for Gozo with its own delivery estimate, next to your Malta rate, and say on your delivery page how many days Gozo orders take.

Can I sell to customers in Italy and beyond?

Yes. Add the countries you ship to and set fixed rates. Keep an eye on the €10,000 EU distance-selling threshold, and tell customers that parcels from Malta can take several days to reach mainland Europe.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
