Step by step

How to sell spices online in 6 steps.

  1. Lead with your blends

Single spices are easy to find anywhere; your own blends aren’t. Put them first, named for what they’re for, like “Sunday roast rub” or “Weeknight taco blend”.

  2. Offer refills from day one

A glass jar for the first order and a lower-priced pouch for refills, as options on the same product. Refills are how a spice shop earns repeat orders.

  3. Say how to cook with it

Two or three dishes and how much to use, per pound or kilo of meat or vegetables. Buyers who know what to cook with a blend finish the jar and come back.

  4. Give grind dates and origins

Freshness is what sets you apart from the supermarket. Note when you ground each batch and where the spices came from, on the product page and the label.

  5. Photograph color and texture

A spoonful on a plain plate in daylight shows color and coarseness; one photo of the jar shows its size. Keep the same background across the whole range.

  6. Build gift sets and samplers

A set of four small jars is an easy gift and an easy first order. Add one before the winter holidays and a barbecue set before Father’s Day.

Built in

A shop made for spices, not a blank template.

  • Jar and refill options

Each spice can have a jar, a refill pouch and a bulk bag as options, each with its own price and stock, on one product page.

  • Recipes on a blog

On the Growth plan, add a blog with a recipe for each blend and link it to the product. Recipes are what home cooks search for, and they lead to your jars.

  • Bulk orders on request

Restaurants and food trucks buying by the kilo or pound send a request with quantities. It lands in your Inbox and you quote by email.

  • Recipe ebooks as downloads

On any paid plan, sell a recipe ebook as a digital download. Buyers get the file after paying and can find it again in their account.

Good to know

  • Allergens in blends

Mustard, celery and sesame are on the UK and EU list of 14 allergens, and sesame is one of the nine in the US. Blends that contain them, or are packed on shared equipment, should say so on the label and the page.

  • Registering a spice business

Dry spice blends are on many US cottage food lists. In the UK and EU you register as a food business, and if you import spices yourself, there are import checks and paperwork too. Check your local rules.

  • Flavor, not health claims

Turmeric and ginger come with a lot of health talk online. On your pages, describe flavor and how to use them, because health claims on food are regulated in the US, the UK and the EU.

General information to help you get started, not legal advice. Rules differ by country, state and product, so check the ones that apply to you.

Questions

Good to know

Do I need a license to sell spice blends?

In many US states, dry spice blends can be sold under cottage food laws with a simple label. In the UK and EU you register as a food business with your local authority. Check what applies where you blend and pack.

How should I package spices for shipping?

Glass jars look good but add weight. Resealable foil or kraft pouches are light and keep out light and air. Many shops ship jars for gifts and pouches for refills.

How long do ground spices stay fresh?

Ground spices lose aroma faster than whole ones, often within a year or so. Grind in small batches, put a best-before date on each pack, and suggest buyers store them away from heat and light.

Can I sell spices to restaurants as well as home cooks?

Yes. Keep jars and pouches for home cooks at checkout, and add a bulk page marked “price on request” for kitchens. Business buyers can add a tax ID at checkout when they reorder.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
