Step by step

How to sell hot sauce online in 6 steps.

  1. Get your recipe checked first

Most hot sauces are acidified foods, and their safety depends on acidity. Have your recipe reviewed or pH-tested by a food lab or process authority, often at a university, before you sell, and keep the results.

  2. Use one heat scale everywhere

A simple mild-to-extreme scale on every product page, matching your labels. Name the peppers, and leave out heat numbers you haven’t measured.

  3. Say what each sauce is good on

Tacos, eggs, wings, noodles: one line of pairings per sauce helps someone choose between five bottles they’ve never tasted.

  4. Build packs and a sampler

A three-pack or a full-range sampler is the most common first order and the most common gift. Make it a product of its own with its own stock.

  5. Pack bottles like glass, because they are

Shrink bands on caps, a sealed bag per bottle and dividers or molded pulp inserts. Weigh a single bottle and a three-pack, and set fixed shipping rates that cover both.

  6. Post your festival and market dates

Put your next markets and festivals on the home page. People who tasted your sauce at a stall search for you later, and the dates tell them you’re real and nearby.

Built in

A shop made for hot sauce, not a blank template.

  • Limited batches with stock

Each sauce has its own stock, so a small seasonal batch shows as sold out the moment the last bottle is paid for, and your core sauces keep selling.

  • Private label on request

Restaurants, breweries and couples who want their own labeled sauce send a request with quantities and dates. It lands in your Inbox and you quote by email.

  • A sauce club on Growth

A new sauce every month or a box every quarter, billed by Stripe. Subscribers see their plan in their account, and you decide what goes in each shipment.

  • Merch in the same checkout

T-shirts and caps with sizes as options and stock per size sit in the same shop, so a fan can add a shirt to a three-pack in one order.

Good to know

  • Acidified food rules

In the US, commercially sold acidified foods fall under FDA rules for processors, and many state cottage food laws exclude hot sauce or require a pH test. In the UK and EU you register as a food business and keep a food safety plan. Check your rules before you sell.

  • Allergens hide in sauces

Mustard, sesame, soy and celery turn up in many sauces. The US has nine major allergens to declare, and the UK and EU fourteen, including mustard and celery. List them on the bottle and on the product page.

  • Check your name before your labels

Bottles need the sauce name, ingredients, allergens, net volume and your details. Search trademark registers for your brand and sauce names before you order a big run of labels.

General information to help you get started, not legal advice. Rules differ by country, state and product, so check the ones that apply to you.

Questions

Good to know

Can I sell homemade hot sauce?

Sometimes, but hot sauce is one of the trickier foods. Many US cottage food laws exclude acidified sauces or need a lab-tested pH, and others require a licensed kitchen. In the UK and EU you register as a food business. Check with your state or local authority first.

What should a hot sauce product page say?

The peppers and main ingredients, a heat level on one scale, what it goes with, the bottle size, allergens and how to store it once opened. Cornerrr can draft the description from a photo of your bottle, and you add the details.

How do I sell at festivals and online without overselling?

Your website tracks stock for online orders. Before a festival, lower the online stock by what you’re taking with you, then raise it again afterwards, so you never sell the same bottle twice.

Can I run a hot sauce of the month club?

Yes, on the Growth plan. Stripe bills subscribers every month or every quarter, they see the plan in their account, and you choose the sauces for each box.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
