Buy now, pay later

What is Afterpay and Clearpay?

Afterpay is a buy now, pay later service, called Clearpay in the UK. Customers split a purchase into four interest-free payments every two weeks, and in the US larger orders can also be spread over 6 or 12 monthly payments that charge interest. Afterpay approves each purchase and collects the payments. Through Stripe it’s for businesses in the US, the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, selling to customers in their own country.

How your customers pay

  1. Afterpay or Clearpay at checkout

The customer chooses Afterpay (Clearpay in the UK) on Stripe Checkout. It shows for customers in your country when the order is within Afterpay’s limits.

  2. Log in or sign up

They’re sent to Afterpay’s website, or to its app on a phone if they have it, to log in or create an account.

  3. Choose a plan

They pick a payment plan and accept the repayment terms, and Afterpay approves or declines the purchase.

  4. You’re paid upfront

Once approved, they return to your order confirmation page and get your order email. You receive the full amount, and Afterpay collects the installments from the customer over time.

Why offer it

Why businesses take Afterpay and Clearpay

  • Simple to understand

Four payments, two weeks apart, no interest. Shoppers understand pay in 4 at a glance, which suits clothing, jewelry and gifts.

  • Afterpay carries the risk

Afterpay covers losses from customer fraud and from customers who don’t repay. Stripe may ask you, on Afterpay’s behalf, to pause a shipment if something looks wrong; do it promptly.

  • Help in gift seasons

Before the winter holidays or Mother’s Day, a pay-in-4 option can make a pricier gift easier to say yes to, without you offering a discount.

  • Clear rules on what it’s for

Afterpay isn’t for alcohol, pre-orders or business-to-business sales. If your shop sells ready-to-ship goods to consumers, it fits well.

Set up

Turn on Afterpay and Clearpay in three steps.

  1. Connect your Stripe account

Link the Stripe account you already have, or create one in a few minutes from Cornerrr. Payments go straight to it; Cornerrr adds no transaction fee.

  2. Turn the method on in Stripe

In your Stripe Dashboard, open the payment method settings and turn it on. Stripe may ask a few questions about your business first.

  3. It shows at checkout

Your Cornerrr checkout is Stripe Checkout, so customers who can use the method see it automatically when their country and your currency match.

Questions

Good to know

How do I accept Afterpay on my website?

Connect your Stripe account to Cornerrr and turn on Afterpay/Clearpay in your Stripe Dashboard’s payment method settings. Cornerrr’s Stripe Checkout then shows it automatically to eligible customers in your own country, in your store’s currency.

Is Clearpay the same as Afterpay?

Yes. Clearpay is Afterpay’s name in the UK. One setting in Stripe covers both, and your UK customers know it as Clearpay.

Can I use Afterpay for subscriptions or pre-orders?

No. Afterpay doesn’t support recurring payments, so Stripe Checkout doesn’t offer it on subscription orders, and Afterpay’s rules don’t allow pre-orders. Use it for items that are ready to ship.

Will Afterpay approve every customer?

No. Afterpay decides each purchase, and orders outside its minimum and maximum amounts don’t show the option. Customers who aren’t approved can pay by card or another method instead.

How do Afterpay refunds work?

Refund through Stripe within 120 days, in full or in part, and your store emails the customer. Afterpay cancels any payments still due and returns what the customer already paid; it can take up to 10 business days and can’t be canceled.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
