Step by step

How to sell olive oil online in 6 steps.

  1. Put the harvest date first

Olive oil is best fresh, and informed buyers look for the harvest date, not just the best-before. Show it on every product, next to the variety and the grove.

  2. Take preorders for the new oil

In the Northern Hemisphere, new-season oil comes in late fall. Turn on “sell when out of stock” for the new harvest, ship when it’s bottled, and say the dispatch date clearly.

  3. Offer sizes for tasting and for cooking

A small bottle to try, a large bottle for the table and a tin for cooking. Tins protect oil from light and are lighter and safer to ship than glass.

  4. Describe the taste honestly

Fruity, bitter and peppery are what tasters look for. A peppery catch at the back of the throat is a sign of fresh oil, so explain it before buyers think something is wrong.

  5. Offer adopt-a-tree plans

A yearly plan where the buyer adopts a tree and receives oil from its harvest is a popular gift. On the Growth plan, Stripe bills it every year.

  6. Ship oil without leaks

Seal caps with shrink bands, bag each bottle and pack them upright with dividers. For large sizes, tins and bag-in-box travel far better than glass.

Built in

A shop made for olive oil, not a blank template.

  • Preorders with the out-of-stock switch

Turn on “sell when out of stock” for next harvest’s oil and keep taking orders before it’s bottled, or leave it off so checkout stops when this year’s oil runs out.

  • Yearly plans on Growth

Adopt-a-tree plans and yearly oil shipments can be subscriptions billed by Stripe every year. Subscribers see their plan in their account.

  • Selling across borders

One currency per store, with VAT worked out at checkout by Stripe Tax once it’s active. On the Pro plan, add prices in other currencies, each shown on its own web address.

  • Trade orders on request

Restaurants, delis and shops ask for your trade prices through a “price on request” page, and the request lands in your Inbox.

Good to know

  • What extra virgin means

In the EU, extra virgin and virgin olive oils must meet chemical and tasting standards, and their labels must state the origin. In the US, federal grades are voluntary, though California sets its own standards for larger producers there.

  • Infused oils need care

Oil infused with fresh garlic, herbs or chili can carry a botulism risk unless it’s made with a tested process. Many US cottage food laws exclude it. Use dried ingredients or a tested method, and check your rules.

  • Heat and light spoil oil

Ship in dark glass or tins, avoid parcels sitting in hot vans in summer, and tell buyers to keep the bottle closed, cool and away from the stove.

General information to help you get started, not legal advice. Rules differ by country, state and product, so check the ones that apply to you.

Questions

Good to know

What should an olive oil label say?

The grade, such as extra virgin, the volume, the origin, a best-before date and your details. Many producers add the harvest date and variety, which buyers look for. EU labels have specific origin wording; check the rules where you sell.

Can I take preorders for the new harvest?

Yes. Turn on “sell when out of stock” for the new-season oil so orders come in before it’s bottled. Say the shipping date on the page so nobody expects it next week.

How do I sell olive oil to customers in other EU countries?

Choose the countries you ship to, and Stripe Tax can work out VAT at checkout once it’s active. Make sure your rates cover heavier parcels abroad, and that your labels are in a language buyers in each country can understand.

Can I sell an adopt-an-olive-tree gift?

Yes, on the Growth plan. Make it a yearly subscription billed by Stripe, describe what the adopter receives and when, and send a personal note to each new adopter by email.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
