What is Bancontact?

Bancontact is Belgium’s own payment scheme: the Bancontact card issued by Belgian banks, and the Bancontact app linked to the same account. Online, the customer approves a payment with either one, and Stripe tells you immediately whether it went through. It takes euros only.

How your customers pay

  1. Select Bancontact

At your Stripe checkout, for an order in euros, the customer chooses Bancontact and lands on a Bancontact page.

  2. Card or app

On a computer, they type their Bancontact card details or scan a QR code with the app. On a phone, a button opens the app directly.

  3. Authorize

They confirm the payment with their card or in the app. They have up to an hour, so a phone call in the middle doesn’t lose the sale.

  4. Paid and back

Bancontact confirms straight away and the customer returns to your website, where the order already shows as paid.

Why offer it

Why businesses take Bancontact

  • A checkout Belgians recognize

The Bancontact logo is on Belgian bank cards, so customers in Belgium see a familiar name instead of having to use a credit card.

  • No chargebacks

Customers authenticate with their bank, so Bancontact has no chargeback process. If someone asks their bank about a payment, the bank sends them back to you.

  • Two years to refund

You can refund a Bancontact payment in full or in part for up to 730 days, handy for warranty returns on bigger items.

  • Works for trade orders too

Through Stripe, Bancontact can be used for sales to other businesses as well as to consumers, which suits wholesale customers in Belgium.

Set up

Turn on Bancontact in three steps.

  1. Connect your Stripe account

Link the Stripe account you already have, or create one in a few minutes from Cornerrr. Payments go straight to it; Cornerrr adds no transaction fee.

  2. Turn the method on in Stripe

In your Stripe Dashboard, open the payment method settings and turn it on. Stripe may ask a few questions about your business first.

  3. It shows at checkout

Your Cornerrr checkout is Stripe Checkout, so customers who can use the method see it automatically when their country and your currency match.

Questions

Good to know

How do I start accepting Bancontact on Cornerrr?

Connect your Stripe account, turn on Bancontact in the payment method settings of your Stripe Dashboard, and price your store in euros. Cornerrr’s Stripe Checkout then offers Bancontact on its own to eligible customers in Belgium.

Can Belgian customers pay a subscription with Bancontact?

Not with Bancontact itself. Stripe’s Checkout takes Bancontact for one-time payments only, so for a subscription on the Growth plan, Belgian customers pay by card or by SEPA Direct Debit, which works from Belgian bank accounts.

How do Bancontact refunds reach the customer?

As a separate credit to their bank account, usually within two to five days. It isn’t labelled as a refund on their statement, so send the customer a short note when you refund.

Is Bancontact only for Belgian businesses?

No. Stripe accounts in the EU, the UK, Switzerland, the US and several other countries can accept it, as long as the customer is in Belgium and the order is in euros.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
