Step by step

How to sell cheese online in 6 steps.

  1. Choose which cheeses ship

Hard and aged cheeses handle a day or two in transit with cold packs; fresh and soft cheeses are riskier. Start with your sturdiest cheeses online, and keep delicate ones for markets and the farm shop.

  2. Pick your shipping days

Ship Monday to Wednesday by a one- or two-day service so boxes never sit in a depot over a weekend. Put the dispatch days on every product page and in the delivery estimate.

  3. Sell by set weights

Offer a half-pound wedge, a pound and a whole wheel, or the metric equivalents, as options with their own prices. Cut close to the weight and say on the page that weights are approximate.

  4. Describe milk, age and rind

Cow, goat or sheep; raw or pasteurized; how long it’s aged; what the rind is and whether to eat it. These are the first things cheese lovers and pregnant buyers check.

  5. Build a tasting box

Three or four cheeses with tasting notes and a pairing card are the easiest first order and the easiest gift. Make the box its own product with its own stock.

  6. Photograph the cut face

Show the inside of a cut wedge, the rind, and a board you’d serve it on. Texture up close tells buyers more about a cheese than any description.

A shop made for cheese, not a blank template.

  • Weights as options

Each cheese is one product with weights as options, each with its own price and stock, so you can cap how many whole wheels you sell from one batch.

  • A cheese club on Growth

A monthly or every-other-month box billed by Stripe. Subscribers see their plan in their account, and you choose the cheeses for each shipment.

  • Shipping rates and tracking

Set an overnight and a standard rate, each with a delivery estimate, and choose the countries you ship to. Add the tracking number to an order and your customer gets the link by email.

  • Shops and restaurants on request

A wholesale page marked “price on request” lets shops and chefs ask for your trade prices and standing orders. Requests land in your Inbox.

Good to know

  • Making cheese needs a licensed dairy

Cheese is almost never a cottage food in the US: you need a licensed dairy and inspections. In the UK and EU, cheesemakers register and often need approval from the food authority, especially to supply shops. Reselling other makers’ cheese has its own rules; check yours.

  • Raw-milk cheese

In the US, cheese made from raw milk must be aged at least 60 days before it’s sold. Say clearly on each product whether the milk is raw or pasteurized, because many buyers, including pregnant ones, look for it.

  • Shipping cheese abroad

Many countries restrict dairy imports, and selling cheese from Great Britain to customers in the EU needs health certificates. Start with your own country and choose the countries you ship to with that in mind.

General information to help you get started, not legal advice. Rules differ by country, state and product, so check the ones that apply to you.

Questions

Good to know

Can I sell cheese online from home?

Not usually. Cheese is generally excluded from US cottage food laws and needs a licensed dairy, and in the UK and EU cheesemakers register and often need approval. If you resell cheese from other makers, different rules apply; check with your local authority.

How do I ship cheese so it stays cold?

Wrap cheese in cheese paper, pack it in an insulated liner with frozen gel packs, and send it by a one- or two-day service early in the week. Test with a box to yourself in warm weather first.

Can I run a cheese of the month club?

Yes, on the Growth plan. Stripe bills subscribers every month or every few months, and they see the plan in their account. Keep the shipping week the same each month so they know when to expect it.

Can I sell wine with my cheese?

Only if you hold the licenses to sell and ship alcohol where your customers are. Many cheese shops sell pairing boxes with crackers, chutney and honey instead, which keep alcohol rules out of it.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
