Step by step

How to sell jam and preserves online in 6 steps.

  1. Follow the fruit calendar

Strawberry in early summer, plum in late summer, marmalade in winter. Add each flavor when it’s made, and keep sold-out flavors on the website so people know what to come back for next year.

  2. Name the fruit and where it grew

Say which farm or orchard the fruit came from and the variety if you know it. “Montmorency cherries from an orchard down the road” sells better than “cherry jam”.

  3. Say how sweet and how set it is

Some buyers want a classic firm set, others want a softer, less sweet spread. Describe both on each jar’s page, and be careful with the names you use, which have legal meanings in some countries.

  4. Photograph a spoonful

One jar with the label facing the camera, and one open jar with a spoon or on toast, in daylight. The color and the pieces of fruit are what make someone add it to the cart.

  5. Make gift sets for the busy months

Three small jars in a box sell well before the winter holidays and for teachers’ gifts in early summer. Add them a few weeks ahead with limited stock.

  6. Pack jars to arrive whole

Wrap each jar, use dividers and test-post a set to a friend. Set a fixed rate for your usual parcel with a delivery estimate, so buyers know the cost before they reach checkout.

Built in

A shop made for jam and preserves, not a blank template.

  • Batch stock per flavor

Each flavor and jar size has its own stock, set to the jars you filled. Stock goes down as orders are paid, and checkout stops when the batch is gone.

  • Favors and custom labels on request

Wedding favor jars and custom-label orders hide their price. Couples and companies send the date, quantity and label wording through a form, and you quote from your Inbox.

  • Discount codes for a new season

On any paid plan, start a code for the first week of a new flavor, or free shipping on gift sets, with start and end dates and a usage limit.

  • Descriptions for every jar

Ask the assistant to write a description for each new flavor from your notes, add an ingredients line, or rewrite the whole range in a warmer voice, then apply what you like.

Good to know

  • Cottage food and preserves

High-sugar fruit jams and jellies are on most US cottage food lists, but low-sugar spreads, pepper jellies, chutneys and other acidified foods often aren’t, or need a tested recipe. Check your state’s list for each product.

  • Names with legal meanings

In the UK and EU, names like jam, extra jam, jelly and marmalade are tied to minimum fruit and sugar content, so a lower-sugar product may need to be sold as a fruit spread. Check the rules where you sell.

  • Seals and shelf life

Use new lids, process jars exactly as your tested recipe says, and put a best-before date on each label. A jar that ferments in the post costs you far more than one sale.

General information to help you get started, not legal advice. Rules differ by country, state and product, so check the ones that apply to you.

Questions

Good to know

Can I sell homemade jam online?

In many US states, yes, under cottage food laws, though some allow sales only within the state or only face to face. In the UK and EU you register your kitchen as a food business first. Check your local rules before you list your first jar.

Can I sell low-sugar jam?

Usually, but it changes the rules. Low-sugar spreads may need a tested recipe or a licensed kitchen in the US, and in the UK and EU you may need to call it a fruit spread rather than jam.

What jar size is best for selling jam online?

Many makers post smaller jars, which are lighter and suit gift sets, and keep large jars for markets. Offer sizes as options on one product, each with its own price and stock.

Can couples order jam jars as wedding favors?

Yes. Add a wedding favors page marked “price on request”. Couples send the date, number of jars and label wording, the request lands in your Inbox and you reply with a quote.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
