Online store for wine

Sell wine online, by the bottle, the case and the club

Describe your wines and Cornerrr builds a cellar-door shop: each wine and vintage with tasting notes and stock, mixed cases, a wine club on Growth and a Stripe checkout. You bring the licenses; the website shows off the wine.

Step by step

How to sell wine online in 6 steps.

  1. Sort your licenses before your shop

Selling wine online needs an alcohol license where you sell from and, in many places, permission or duty arrangements where you ship to. List exactly where you may legally deliver before you set up shipping.

  2. Ship only where you’re allowed

In Cornerrr you choose the countries you ship to, not the states or regions inside one. Say on the shipping page and each product exactly where you deliver, and refund any order you can’t legally fill.

  3. Give each vintage its own page

Grapes, vintage, region, alcohol level, tasting notes, food pairings and how long it will keep. Put them in the same order every time, the way wine buyers compare.

  4. Sell mixed cases

A six- or twelve-bottle mixed case is easier to ship than single bottles and better value for buyers. Use wine shipping boxes with molded inserts and test one by post.

  5. Start a wine club

On the Growth plan, a quarterly club shipment can be a subscription billed by Stripe. Say what each shipment holds, when it ships and how to cancel.

  6. Say who can buy

State on the website that buyers must be of legal drinking age and that an adult must sign for the delivery. Carriers that ship alcohol usually require an adult signature.

Built in

A shop made for wine, not a blank template.

  • Vintages with their own stock

Each wine and vintage has its own stock, and bottle or case options each have their own price, so a small library release closes itself when the last case sells.

  • A wine club on Growth

A monthly, quarterly or twice-yearly shipment billed by Stripe. Club subscribers see their plan in their account.

  • Tastings and private events

Sell tasting tickets as products with the number of places as stock, and take private tasting requests through a form that lands in your Inbox.

  • Sales tax and VAT at checkout

Stripe Tax can calculate sales tax or VAT at checkout once it’s active on your Stripe account. Alcohol excise duties are separate and stay your responsibility.

Good to know

  • In the United States

Wineries usually need federal and state licenses plus a direct shipping permit for each state they ship to, and a few states don’t allow direct shipping to consumers. Wine shops face tighter limits than wineries. Carriers need an alcohol shipping agreement, and USPS doesn’t carry alcohol.

  • In the UK and EU

In the UK, alcohol sales need a license for the premises the wine is sold or dispatched from, and age checks at delivery. Selling to consumers in another EU country usually means paying that country’s excise duty, often through a tax representative. Check each country first.

  • Check payment and carrier rules

Payment providers and carriers have their own rules for alcohol. Read Stripe’s restricted business rules for your country and your carrier’s alcohol terms before you open the shop.

General information to help you get started, not legal advice. Rules differ by country, state and product, so check the ones that apply to you.

How it works

From a few words to a shop that takes payments, live.

  1. Step 1: Describe your business

A sentence or two is enough: what you do, who it’s for and how people buy from you.

  2. Step 2: We build it while you watch

Cornerrr writes your pages, adds your products or services, and picks the colours, fonts and look. It takes about a minute.

  3. Step 3: Connect payments

Link a Stripe account, or create one in a few minutes. Your customers pay you directly.

  4. Step 4: You’re live

Publish on your free Cornerrr web address, or use your own. Change anything later by asking.

Questions

Good to know

What permits do I need to ship wine to customers?

Usually more than one. You usually need a license to sell alcohol and, in many US states and EU countries, a permit or a duty arrangement for the places you ship to. Talk to your licensing authority before you take the first order.

Can Cornerrr block orders from states I can’t ship to?

No. You choose the countries you ship to, but not states or regions inside a country. Say clearly on your shipping and product pages where you deliver, and refund any order you can’t legally send.

How do I run a wine club on my website?

On the Growth plan, add the club as a subscription billed by Stripe as often as you ship, and club subscribers see it in their account. Put what each shipment includes and how to cancel on the club page.

Can I sell tasting tickets on the same website?

Yes. Each tasting date can be a product with the number of places as stock, so checkout stops when it’s full. Private group tastings can go through a request form instead.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
