Step by step

How to sell soap online in 6 steps.

  1. Decide what your soap is, legally

In the US, whether a bar is soap, a cosmetic or a drug depends on what it’s made of and what you claim it does. Settle your words before you write labels or pages, because they change which rules apply.

  2. Add stock when a batch has cured

Cold process bars need weeks on the rack. Add stock when a batch is ready, not when it’s poured, and let checkout stop selling a scent when its last bar goes.

  3. Photograph the cut face and the lather

Show the whole bar, a cut face for the swirls and texture, and a lather shot. A bar in a hand or on a dish shows size better than grams on a page.

  4. Say what’s in each bar

List oils, butters, scent (essential oil or fragrance oil), colorants and the bar’s weight. Many shoppers look for unscented or palm-free bars, so say so wherever it’s true.

  5. Use samplers to sell more scents

A box of three or four bars, or half bars as a sampler, gets people to try scents they wouldn’t pick alone. Trimmings and odd-shaped bars can sell cheaply as soap ends.

  6. Set shipping by box weight

Soap is sturdy but heavy. Weigh a packed box of one, three and six bars, set fixed rates that cover each, and use a free-shipping code above an order amount you choose.

Built in

A shop made for soap, not a blank template.

  • Stock that follows your racks

Each scent and size has its own stock. When a batch sells out, checkout stops taking orders for it until you add the next cured batch.

  • Favors and wholesale as requests

Couples, hotels and gift shops can ask for favor bars or trade prices through a form marked “price on request”. The request lands in your Inbox and you reply by email.

  • Tax and shipping at checkout

Stripe Tax can add sales tax or VAT to each order, and your fixed shipping rates and the countries you ship to show at checkout.

  • Changes in plain words

Ask the assistant for a new “Unscented” collection, a page about how you make your soap, or shorter descriptions on every bar, then apply or undo each change.

Good to know

  • Soap, cosmetic or drug in the US

The FDA treats a bar as “true soap”, which the CPSC oversees, only if it’s mostly fats and alkali and sold only for cleaning. Claims like moisturizing or deodorizing make it a cosmetic, and claims about killing germs or clearing skin conditions make it a drug.

  • In the EU and UK, soap is a cosmetic

There, soap for the skin falls under cosmetics law however it’s made: it needs a safety assessment, a Responsible Person and CPNP or SCPN notification before sale, and the label must name certain fragrance allergens.

  • Weigh bars after curing

Bars lose water as they cure. Put the cured weight on your labels and product pages, so the weight you state is the weight customers get.

General information to help you get started, not legal advice. Rules differ by country, state and product, so check the ones that apply to you.

Questions

Good to know

Do I need a license to sell handmade soap?

In the US there’s usually no special license for soap itself, though your city or state may ask you to register a business, and your claims decide which product rules apply. In the EU and UK, every soap needs a safety assessment before you sell it.

Can I call my soap natural or organic?

“Natural” has no legal definition for soap in the US, so say exactly what’s in the bar instead. Only call ingredients organic when they are certified, and only use a certification seal you actually hold.

How do I take orders for soap wedding favors?

List favors as a product with “price on request”, so couples send the date, the number of guests and a scent. The request lands in your Inbox, and you reply by email with a price and a label mock-up.

How should I pack soap for shipping?

Wrap each bar so the scents don’t mix and pack them snugly in a small box. On Cornerrr you set fixed rates for the countries you ship to, and when you add the tracking number your customer gets a shipping email with a link.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
