Buy now, pay later

What is Affirm?

Affirm is a buy now, pay later service for customers in the US and Canada. Depending on the order size it offers interest-free payments every two weeks, a single payment in 30 days in the US, or monthly installments for up to 36 months that may charge interest. Affirm approves each purchase and collects the payments. Through Stripe it’s for businesses in the US and Canada, selling to customers in the same country.

How your customers pay

  1. Affirm at checkout

The customer chooses Affirm on Stripe Checkout. It appears for customers in your country on orders above Affirm’s minimum amount.

  2. Log in to Affirm

They’re sent to Affirm’s website, or the Affirm app on a phone, to log in or create an account.

  3. Pick a plan

Affirm shows the plans it offers for that order and that customer. They pick one and accept the terms, and Affirm approves or declines.

  4. You’re paid upfront

They come back to your order confirmation page and get your order email. You receive the full amount, and Affirm sends the customer its own emails about the loan and collects the payments.

Why offer it

Why businesses take Affirm

  • Made for bigger tickets

Affirm’s monthly plans suit things people usually save up for: a solid-wood dining table, a good road bike, an engagement ring or an original painting.

  • Terms shown before they agree

Affirm shows the customer the repayment terms before they accept, so they know what each payment will be and when it’s due. That can help a hesitant buyer commit to a big order.

  • Fraud risk on Affirm’s side

Affirm covers losses from customer fraud. Stripe may ask you, on Affirm’s behalf, to pause a shipment before it goes out; follow those requests quickly.

  • Check the rules first

Affirm doesn’t allow business-to-business sales, home improvement or contractor work, professional services such as legal or accounting, whole vehicles, or pre-orders. Healthcare has extra requirements.

Set up

Turn on Affirm in three steps.

  1. Connect your Stripe account

Link the Stripe account you already have, or create one in a few minutes from Cornerrr. Payments go straight to it; Cornerrr adds no transaction fee.

  2. Turn the method on in Stripe

In your Stripe Dashboard, open the payment method settings and turn it on. Stripe may ask a few questions about your business first.

  3. It shows at checkout

Your Cornerrr checkout is Stripe Checkout, so customers who can use the method see it automatically when their country and your currency match.

Questions

Good to know

How do I accept Affirm on my Cornerrr website?

Connect a US or Canadian Stripe account and turn on Affirm in your Stripe Dashboard’s payment method settings. Cornerrr’s Stripe Checkout then shows it automatically to eligible customers in your country, in your store’s currency.

Does my website need anything special for Affirm?

Affirm asks that your website is public and shows prices in your customer’s local currency. A live Cornerrr store priced in US dollars for US customers does both.

Can I use Affirm for subscriptions?

No. Affirm doesn’t support recurring payments, so Stripe Checkout doesn’t show it on subscription orders. It’s for one-time purchases.

Will Affirm approve every customer?

No. Affirm decides each purchase and which plans to offer. Customers who aren’t approved can still pay by card or another method on the same checkout.

How do Affirm refunds work?

Refund through Stripe within 120 days, in full or in part, and your store emails the customer. Affirm cancels the remaining payments and returns what the customer paid, minus any interest they’ve already paid.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
