Step by step

How to sell knitwear online in 6 steps.

  1. Decide ready-made or made to order

A hand-knit sweater can take weeks. Keep a few finished pieces with real stock, and list the rest made to order with “sell when out of stock” turned on and the making time in the first line.

  2. Give finished measurements and ease

Chest, length, sleeve and yoke depth of the finished garment, plus the ease it’s designed with, such as 10 cm of positive ease for a relaxed fit. Knitwear buyers choose their size by these numbers.

  3. Name the yarn

The fiber, the blend, the weight and where it came from. “Bluefaced Leicester wool, spun in Yorkshire” says far more than “wool”. Say if a yarn can feel itchy to some people, as mohair and some wools do.

  4. Photograph texture in side light

Low light from a window makes cables and ribs stand out. Add a close-up of the stitch, a flat-lay and a photo worn, so shoppers can see the drape.

  5. Sell your patterns too

If you design what you knit, sell the pattern as a digital download on any paid plan. Buyers get the file after payment and can find it again in their account.

  6. Open before the cold arrives

Knitwear sells from early fall to midwinter. Post the last made-to-order date for the holidays clearly, and switch off made-to-order sales when your queue is full.

Built in

A shop made for knitwear, not a blank template.

  • Made to order, plainly

Turn on “sell when out of stock” for pieces you knit after an order, and give the making time on the product. Each order arrives by email and in your Orders list.

  • Patterns as digital downloads

On any paid plan, a PDF pattern is a digital download delivered after payment and kept in the buyer’s account, next to their orders.

  • Sizes and yarn colors as options

A cardigan can have sizes and yarn colors as options, each with its own price and stock, so a hand-dyed color that costs more can be priced on its own.

  • Commissions in your Inbox

Custom colors, sizes or matching sweaters for a whole family go through a request form with the price hidden, and land in your Inbox for you to quote.

Good to know

  • Wool and fiber labeling

In the US, products containing wool follow the Wool Products Labeling Act, and cashmere has its own definition, so name fibers exactly and in percentages. In the EU and UK, fiber composition must be shown before purchase, including online.

  • Handmade still needs a label

Hand-knit garments you sell are generally still textile products, so the fiber and care rules apply to them too. A sewn-in label with the blend and care, or a printed tag, is the usual answer.

  • Care heads off complaints

Hand wash cool, lay flat to dry and never tumble dry: put this on a card in every parcel. Many knitwear complaints are about shrinking after the first wash, and a note that light pilling is normal saves more.

Questions

Good to know

How do I price hand-knit sweaters?

Add the yarn, your hours at a fair hourly rate, packaging and fees. Hand-knits are slow, so many knitters sell patterns, kits or smaller pieces like hats next to sweaters to keep the shop worth running.

Can I sell knitwear made from someone else’s pattern?

Check the pattern’s terms. Some designers allow small-scale selling of finished pieces with credit, others don’t. Your own designs avoid the question.

Can I sell knitting kits and patterns on the same website?

Yes. On Cornerrr, kits are products with stock, patterns are digital downloads on a paid plan, and finished pieces can be ready-made or made to order. They all go through the same Stripe checkout.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
