Step by step

How to sell hats online in 6 steps.

  1. Size by head circumference

Give each size a head measurement in inches and centimeters, and explain how to measure: a soft tape around the head, just above the ears and across the forehead. Mark which styles are adjustable or one size.

  2. Turn sizes and colors into options

Each style is one product with size and color as options and stock for every combination. A fitted felt may need four sizes, while a strapback cap needs one.

  3. Photograph on a head, front and side

Show each hat worn from the front, the side and three-quarters, plus the inside band and label. Brim width and crown height only make sense on a head.

  4. Sell the season ahead

Beanies and felts sell from early fall into winter, sun hats and caps from spring. Add the coming season’s styles a few weeks early, and lower last season’s prices once the new ones are up.

  5. Take custom orders as requests

Teams, breweries and businesses want caps with their logo. A custom page with the price hidden and a form for quantity, color, logo and deadline brings those requests to your Inbox.

  6. Ship in a box that holds the shape

Structured hats crush in a mailer. Pack them in a box with tissue in the crown and set fixed shipping rates that cover the box size; beanies can go in a light mailer.

Built in

A shop made for hats, not a blank template.

  • Sizes and colors with their own stock

A fedora in medium and the same fedora in large keep separate stock and SKUs. Checkout stops when the size someone needs is gone, instead of selling the wrong fit.

  • Custom and team orders in your Inbox

Requests come with the details you ask for and land in your Inbox and your email. You reply with a mock-up and a quote.

  • A page for finding your size

Add a “find your size” page with your size table, edit it by clicking and link it from every fitted hat. Ask the assistant to add that link to all products at once.

  • Payments straight to you

Customers pay through your Stripe account by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay and the local methods you turn on. Cornerrr adds no transaction fee on top of Stripe’s.

Good to know

  • Labeling rules differ for hats

In the EU and UK, a hat made mostly of textile needs its fiber composition shown, while US textile labeling rules treat headwear differently. Listing the materials anyway answers the first question buyers have.

  • Sun protection claims

If you sell a sun hat as UPF 50, keep the fabric test report. Without one, describe the brim width and the weave instead of quoting a rating.

  • Logos you’re allowed to use

For custom caps, ask customers to confirm they own or may use the logo they send, and keep that in the request email. Sports teams and brands protect their marks.

General information to help you get started, not legal advice. Rules differ by country, state and product, so check the ones that apply to you.

Questions

Good to know

What hat sizes should I make?

Most adult heads measure between about 21 and 24 inches (53 to 61 cm). Fitted styles usually come in S, M, L and XL across that range, with a sweatband or sizing tape inside to fine-tune.

Can I sell custom embroidered caps?

Yes. Ready-made designs sell as products with stock, and logo caps work as requests with the price hidden. The form asks for quantity and artwork details, and you reply from your Inbox with a quote.

How should I ship hats so they don’t get crushed?

Use a box a little larger than the hat, stuff the crown with tissue and pad around the brim. Set a fixed rate that covers the box, and add the tracking number so the customer gets a tracking link.

When should I start selling hats for the season?

A few weeks before the season your hats suit: late summer for beanies and felts, early spring for sun hats and caps. That gives new listings time to be seen before the busy weeks.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
