Step by step

How to sell yarn online in 6 steps.

  1. Make each colorway one product

List a colorway once, with the base and weight as options and stock for each. Knitters who love a color can see every base it comes on in one place.

  2. Photograph color honestly

Shoot skeins and a knitted swatch in daylight, without filters, and say that colors vary between screens and between dye lots. A swatch shows how a speckle or variegation knits up.

  3. Put the fiber facts on every page

Fiber content, weight, yardage and meters per skein, a needle or hook range, whether it’s superwash, and how to wash it. Knitters substitute yarns by these numbers.

  4. Explain dye lots

Hand-dyed skeins vary from batch to batch. Tell knitters to buy enough for a project at once and to alternate skeins, and say whether you can dye more of the same lot.

  5. Start a yarn club

On the Growth plan, a monthly club can be a subscription that Stripe bills automatically. Say how many skeins arrive, when they ship and that members contact you to stop.

  6. Announce your shop updates

Many indie dyers restock in announced updates. Put the next date and time on your home page, and tell newsletter subscribers through the email tool you use.

Built in

A shop made for yarn, not a blank template.

  • Bases and weights with their own stock

Sock, DK and worsted versions of a colorway each keep their own stock, and checkout stops when a batch sells out.

  • A yarn club billed every month

On the Growth plan, Stripe bills club members automatically, with optional free trial days, and members see their subscription in their account.

  • Sweater quantities as an option

Add a pack size option, such as one skein or a sweater’s worth from one dye lot, each with its own price and stock.

  • Wholesale requests

Mark wholesale “price on request”. Yarn shops send their quantities and colorways through a form, and the request lands in your Inbox.

Good to know

  • Fiber content on the ball band

Yarn sold to consumers needs its fiber content stated in many places, including the EU and the UK. Check the rules for wording and percentages where you sell before you order your ball bands.

  • Dye safely and say what you used

Use dyes and mordants made for the fiber, follow their safety sheets, and keep dyeing pots apart from food. Some buyers ask whether you use acid dyes or natural dyes, so say on your About page.

General information to help you get started, not legal advice. Rules differ by country, state and product, so check the ones that apply to you.

How it works

From a few words to a shop that takes payments, live.

  1. Step 1: Describe your business

A sentence or two is enough: what you do, who it’s for and how people buy from you.

  2. Step 2: We build it while you watch

Cornerrr writes your pages, adds your products or services, and picks the colours, fonts and look. It takes about a minute.

  3. Step 3: Connect payments

Link a Stripe account, or create one in a few minutes. Your customers pay you directly.

  4. Step 4: You’re live

Publish on your free Cornerrr web address, or use your own. Change anything later by asking.

Questions

Good to know

How do I sell hand-dyed yarn online?

List each colorway with bases and weights as options and stock for each, photograph skeins and swatches in daylight, and explain dye lots. Cornerrr builds the shop from your description, and you add the photos.

Can I run a yarn club or subscription?

Yes, on the Growth plan: Stripe bills members every month, and they see their subscription in their account. They can’t pause or change it themselves yet, so they ask you.

How do I handle dye lots when selling online?

Offer sweater quantities from one lot as an option, say on every page that lots vary, and suggest knitters buy everything for a project in one order.

Can yarn shops buy wholesale from my website?

Yes. Mark wholesale “price on request” so shops send their order through a form, and turn on tax ID collection for business buyers who order at checkout.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
