Step by step

How to sell knitting patterns online in 6 steps.

  1. Get it tech edited and test knit

Have a technical editor check the numbers for every size, and test knitters work it before release. A mistake in row 40 of a sweater costs knitters hours, and they remember who wrote it.

  2. Lead with the details knitters filter by

Yarn weight, fiber, yardage per size, needle sizes, gauge, finished measurements and skill level: put them at the top of the description, in the same order on every pattern.

  3. Write sizes for both sides of the Atlantic

Give needle sizes in US numbers and millimeters and yardage in yards and meters. For crochet, say whether you use US or UK terms: a UK double crochet is a US single crochet.

  4. Say whether it’s charted, written or both

Many knitters strongly prefer one or the other. State which the pattern includes, and add a larger-print version of busy charts for knitters who work from a tablet or a printout.

  5. Photograph the finished piece in daylight

Show it worn, laid flat with measurements, and close up on the stitch pattern, with colors as true as you can get them. Knitters zoom in on texture before they buy.

  6. Pair patterns with yarn

Suggest yarns at two or three budgets, and if you work with a dyer, sell kits with enough yarn for each size from one dye lot.

Built in

A shop made for knitting patterns, not a blank template.

  • A pattern library in every knitter’s account

Every pattern a knitter buys from you stays in their account on your website, ready to download on a phone or tablet at knit night. They sign in with a code sent to their email.

  • Kits with sizes as options

Sell a kit with each size as an option and its own stock, since bigger sizes take more skeins. Checkout stops when the kit yarn for that size runs out.

  • Errata without emailing everyone

Upload the corrected PDF to the pattern, and buyers download the fixed version from their account. Note the date of the change on the product page.

Good to know

  • Ravelry and your own website

Many knitters browse patterns on Ravelry. You can list there too and point to your own website, where your patterns, kits and newsletter sign-up live together. Cornerrr doesn’t connect to Ravelry, so keep prices in step by hand.

  • Name yarns so knitters can substitute

If you name a commercial yarn, give its weight, fiber and yardage per skein as well. Yarns are discontinued, and those three facts let knitters find a match years later.

  • Kit yarn needs a fiber label

When you sell yarn in a kit, label its fiber content. The EU, the UK and the US have textile labeling rules; check what applies where you ship.

General information to help you get started, not legal advice. Rules differ by country, state and product, so check the ones that apply to you.

How it works

From a few words to a shop that takes payments, live.

  1. Step 1: Describe your business

A sentence or two is enough: what you do, who it’s for and how people buy from you.

  2. Step 2: We build it while you watch

Cornerrr writes your pages, adds your products or services, and picks the colours, fonts and look. It takes about a minute.

  3. Step 3: Connect payments

Link a Stripe account, or create one in a few minutes. Your customers pay you directly.

  4. Step 4: You’re live

Publish on your free Cornerrr web address, or use your own. Change anything later by asking.

Questions

Good to know

Where do knitters look for new patterns?

Ravelry, Instagram, knitting groups and searches like “raglan sweater pattern DK”. Your own website gives each pattern a page search engines can find, with your kits and other designs one click away.

Can I sell crochet patterns the same way?

Yes. List them like knitting patterns, and say in the title whether the pattern uses US or UK terms, since crocheters check before they buy.

Can I sell a pattern that uses a stitch I didn’t invent?

Stitches and basic techniques are generally shared by everyone; what you write, chart and photograph is your own work. Don’t copy another designer’s pattern text, charts or photos.

How do I run a knit-along from my website?

List the pattern with the start date in the description and a discount code that ends when the knit-along begins. On the Growth plan, post weekly progress notes on your blog.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
