Step by step

How to sell baby clothes online in 6 steps.

  1. Size by months and by height

Baby sizes jump fast. Give each one a month range and a height, such as 0–3 months for babies up to about 61 cm, and say whether a style is cut roomy enough for cloth diapers.

  2. Make gifting the main path

Many baby clothes are bought by people who aren’t the parents. Add a gift collection, gift sets by age and a tip on choosing a size: a size up is often the safer choice for a newborn gift.

  3. Show the details parents check

Snaps at the bottom for changes, fold-over mitten cuffs, envelope necks, tag-free labels. Photograph them close up, because these details often decide the purchase more than the print does.

  4. Lead with fabric and care

Fiber content, any certification you hold, washing temperature and whether it will shrink. Parents wash baby clothes before the first wear, so say how much shrinking to expect.

  5. Photograph flat, and babies briefly

Flat-lays on a soft background with a muslin or a ruler for scale work for most listings. If you photograph babies, keep sessions short with a parent in reach, and get written consent.

  6. Pack gifts ready to give

Many orders go straight to the new family. Pack in tissue and a box that looks like a present, leave prices out of the parcel, and offer gift wrap as an option on your gift sets.

Built in

A shop made for baby clothes, not a blank template.

  • Month sizes with their own stock

Each style keeps stock for every size from newborn to 24 months, and every color. Stock goes down when an order is paid, so gift buyers can’t order a size you sold yesterday.

  • Gift orders to another address

Shoppers give the delivery address at checkout, so a gift can go straight to the new parents while the order confirmation goes to the buyer.

  • Personalization by request

Embroidered names and birth dates work as a request: a form for the name, the item and the size, which lands in your Inbox for you to confirm and price.

  • Words that sound like you

Cornerrr writes gentle, plain product descriptions and an About page on why you make baby clothes, and the assistant can add the care line to every product at once.

Good to know

  • US rules for baby clothes

In the US, baby clothes are children’s products under the CPSIA: they need tracking labels, a Children’s Product Certificate and lead limits for snaps and other parts. Children’s sleepwear has flammability rules too, with an exception for garments sized 9 months and under.

  • Fastenings and trims

Buttons, bows, pompoms and appliqués on baby clothes must stay firmly attached. Pull-test them on every batch, and leave loose decorations off the smallest sizes.

  • Organic and certified claims

Say organic only if the fabric is certified, for example to GOTS, and keep the certificate. Putting the GOTS label on your own products needs certification of your own, not only certified fabric.

Questions

Good to know

What sizes should I make baby clothes in?

Many shops start with newborn, 0–3, 3–6, 6–12 and 12–18 months. Gift buyers often choose 3–6 and 6–12 months, so keep more stock in those sizes.

Do baby clothes need to be flame resistant?

In the US, children’s sleepwear above 9 months must meet flammability rules or be tight-fitting, while infant garments sized 9 months and under are outside those sleepwear rules. Day clothes follow the general clothing flammability standard, which ordinary fabrics usually meet. The CPSC’s pages have the details.

Can I sell a baby clothes subscription?

Yes, on the Growth plan. A box of the next size up every three months is a common idea, billed by Stripe. Email the family before each box to confirm the size.

How do I write a baby clothes product description?

Start with what it is and the size range, then fabric, fastenings and care. Parents skim for snaps, softness and washing, and gift buyers look for a sizing tip.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
