Step by step

How to sell books online in 6 steps.

  1. One page per title, formats as options

List each book once, with paperback, hardcover and signed copy as options, each with its own price and stock. Ebooks can be a separate download product.

  2. Give the details readers check

Blurb, page count, format, ISBN if it has one, series order, and the age range for children’s and young adult books. Add the first chapter or a few pages as a preview.

  3. Offer what big stores can’t

Signed copies, dedications on request, bookplates, series bundles and special editions give readers a reason to buy from you rather than a big retailer.

  4. Take preorders for the next book

Open a preorder with the publication month and a set stock, and ship signed copies on release day. Early orders also tell you how many to print.

  5. Pick a book-friendly shipping rate

In the US, USPS Media Mail is cheaper for books but slower; in the UK, a single paperback can often go as a large letter. Set fixed rates by format and number of books.

  6. Add events and visits

School visits, library talks and book club calls can be requests with the price hidden. Ask for the date, the audience and the place in the form.

Built in

A shop made for books, not a blank template.

  • Formats with their own stock

Paperback, hardcover and signed copies are options, each with its own price, SKU and stock, so the signed run stops when you’ve signed them all.

  • Ebooks delivered for you

On any paid plan, ebook files such as EPUB or PDF are delivered after payment and stay in the reader’s account to download again.

  • Event requests

Visits and talks hide their price and cart button. Schools and libraries send the details, the request lands in your Inbox and by email, and you reply.

  • A blog for book news

On the Growth plan, post release news, writing updates and event dates to a blog on your own website.

Good to know

  • ISBNs

You don’t need an ISBN to sell your own book from your own website, but most bookstores, libraries and distributors expect one, and each format usually needs its own.

  • VAT on books

Printed books and ebooks are zero-rated in the UK, and many EU countries give books a reduced VAT rate. Check the rate where you sell, and set up Stripe Tax before your first order.

  • Media Mail rules

USPS Media Mail is for books and a few other media only, can be opened for inspection and is slower than other services. Don’t add mugs or tote bags to the same parcel.

General information to help you get started, not legal advice. Rules differ by country, state and product, so check the ones that apply to you.

How it works

From a few words to a shop that takes payments, live.

  1. Step 1: Describe your business

A sentence or two is enough: what you do, who it’s for and how people buy from you.

  2. Step 2: We build it while you watch

Cornerrr writes your pages, adds your products or services, and picks the colours, fonts and look. It takes about a minute.

  3. Step 3: Connect payments

Link a Stripe account, or create one in a few minutes. Your customers pay you directly.

  4. Step 4: You’re live

Publish on your free Cornerrr web address, or use your own. Change anything later by asking.

Questions

Good to know

Do I need an ISBN to sell my book on my own website?

No. Most bookstores, libraries and distributors need one, but you can sell copies from your own website without it. On Cornerrr you can still put the ISBN in the description or use it as the product’s SKU.

Can I sell ebooks and print books on the same website?

Yes. Print books are products with stock and shipping, and ebooks are digital downloads on any paid plan. Put both in the same series collection so readers pick their format.

How do I sell signed copies of my book?

Add “Signed” as an option on each title with its own stock. If you write dedications, say on the page how readers send you the name. Sign as orders come in, or in batches before a launch.

Is it worth selling books on my own site when big retailers exist?

For many authors, yes: you keep more of each sale, you know who your readers are, and you can offer signed copies and bundles that big retailers can’t. Most authors still list in the big stores too.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
