Step by step

How to sell paintings online in 6 steps.

  1. Give each original its own page

One painting, one product, a stock of one. When it sells, checkout stops, and you can keep the page up as part of your portfolio with a line saying it has found a home.

  2. Photograph it straight, then in a room

Shoot the painting square-on in soft daylight with no glare, then at an angle to show the brushwork, then on a wall beside furniture for scale. Crop out the easel and the studio floor.

  3. List the details collectors ask for

Size in inches and centimeters, medium, surface (canvas, linen, panel or paper), framed or unframed, wired for hanging, varnished, signed, and the year. Keep them in the same order on every painting.

  4. Tell the story behind it

A few lines on where it was painted and why make an original feel like part of your life rather than stock. Ask the assistant to tidy your studio notes into a short description.

  5. Decide how you show prices

Many galleries hide prices, but online buyers often move on without one. Show prices on most works, and keep “price on request” for your largest pieces and for commissions.

  6. Plan the shipping of each size

Small works travel well in a strong box with corner protectors; large canvases may need a custom box or crate. Set shipping rates by size, and for big pieces say you’ll confirm delivery by email.

Built in

A shop made for paintings, not a blank template.

  • A stock of one, never sold twice

Set each original’s stock to one. When it’s paid for, stock drops to zero and checkout stops, so two collectors can’t buy the same painting.

  • Commission requests

Commissions hide their price and cart button. People send the subject, size and deadline through a form, the request lands in your Inbox, and you reply by email.

  • Collections by series or size

Group paintings into collections such as a series, a place or small works, so buyers can browse the way they think about your work.

  • Ways to pay for bigger pieces

Collectors pay through your own Stripe account by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, and by direct debit or buy now, pay later methods where Stripe offers them in your country. Cornerrr adds no transaction fee.

Good to know

  • Ship with tracking and a signature

For originals, use a tracked service with a signature on delivery, and insure valuable pieces through your carrier or a separate policy. Add the tracking number to the order so the buyer gets a shipping email.

  • Returns on originals

Decide what happens if a painting arrives damaged or isn’t what the buyer pictured, and write it on your returns page. In the EU and UK, online buyers can usually cancel within 14 days, though work made to their own specification is an exception.

  • The copyright stays with you

Selling a painting doesn’t sell its copyright. You can still make prints of it unless you agree otherwise, so say so in your terms if buyers might ask.

General information to help you get started, not legal advice. Rules differ by country, state and product, so check the ones that apply to you.

Questions

Good to know

How do I price my paintings to sell online?

Many artists price by size, with a rate per square inch or centimeter plus framing, and keep prices the same on their website, in galleries and at open studios. Buyers trust prices that don’t change with the venue.

How do I ship a painting safely?

Wrap it in glassine, add corner protectors and foam board on both faces, then box it so it can’t move. On Cornerrr you set the shipping rates and add the tracking number, and the buyer gets a shipping email with the link.

Can people commission a painting through my website?

Yes. Add a commission page marked “price on request”. People send the subject, size and date, the request lands in your Inbox, and you agree the details and the price with them by email.

Should I sell paintings on my own site or through galleries?

Many artists do both. Your own website gives collectors one place to see all your work, and Cornerrr takes no commission on each sale, only Stripe’s fees apply. Agree with your galleries how your online prices compare.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
