Online store for toys

Sell toys online, with the ages and safety marks parents look for

To sell toys online, answer what parents check first: the age, the safety marks and what’s in the box. Cornerrr builds a toy shop with those details on every product, collections by age, gift sets, stock for the holiday rush and a Stripe checkout.

Step by step

How to sell toys online in 6 steps.

  1. Learn the safety rules before you list

In the US, toys for children 12 and under need testing at a CPSC-accepted lab, a Children’s Product Certificate and permanent tracking labels. In the EU toys need CE marking, and in Great Britain UKCA or CE. Check the rules for each place you sell.

  2. Show choking warnings on the website too

In the US, toys with small parts, small balls, marbles or balloons need their choking hazard warning shown on the website near the product, not only on the box. Add it to every product it applies to.

  3. Sort by age and by gift

Parents and grandparents shop by age: baby, toddler, three to five, six and up. Add a collection for each age and one for gifts, and put the recommended age on every product.

  4. Photograph toys at play scale

Show the toy out of the box, next to a hand or a familiar object for size, and everything that comes in the box. Get written permission before you photograph anyone else’s child.

  5. Write what’s in the box

Number of pieces, batteries needed or included, dimensions and materials. Parents check these before buying a present, and clear answers save returns.

  6. Stock up for the holidays

Many toy shops do their biggest trade in November and December. Order stock early, say the last order date for holiday delivery and keep stock counts right so checkout stops before you oversell.

Built in

A shop made for toys, not a blank template.

  • Warnings on the products that need them

Ask the assistant to add an age range and the right warning line to each toy, then check every one against the packaging before you apply the change.

  • Holiday stock that stops at zero

Each toy has its own stock count, and checkout stops when it sells out, so a December rush doesn’t leave you with orders you can’t fill.

  • Gift wrapping and gift sets

Add gift wrapping as an option with its own price, and build gift sets by age as their own products with their own stock.

  • Orders from schools and daycares

Schools and daycares can ask for bulk orders through a request form, add a tax ID at checkout and get an invoice for one-time orders.

Good to know

  • Testing relief for small makers

In the US, small-batch toy makers can register with the CPSC for relief from some third-party testing, but not all of it, and the toy still has to meet the safety standard. Read the CPSC’s small business guidance before you sell handmade toys.

  • Selling into the EU

EU product safety rules ask online listings to show the manufacturer, a product identifier and any warnings, and a business based in the EU must be responsible for each toy. Check this before you add EU countries to your shipping.

  • Second-hand and vintage toys

Used toys sold to families are still covered by safety rules, and old toys may contain lead paint or small parts. Check recalls before you resell, and only sell vintage toys as collectibles for adults if that’s honestly what they are.

General information to help you get started, not legal advice. Rules differ by country, state and product, so check the ones that apply to you.

Questions

Good to know

Do I need a license to sell toys online?

Usually you need a general business registration rather than a toy license, but the toys themselves must meet safety rules: testing and certificates in the US, CE or UKCA marking in Europe. Check your local business rules too.

Can I sell handmade toys online?

Yes, but handmade toys follow the same safety rules as factory toys, with some testing relief for registered small-batch makers in the US. Many makers start with simple designs and finishes that are already tested.

How do I handle the holiday rush in a small toy shop?

Order stock early, put the last order date for holiday delivery on your home page and keep stock counts accurate. Cornerrr stops checkout when a toy sells out and sends the shipping email with tracking when you add the number.

Should every toy show an age range?

Yes. The age grade decides which warnings a toy needs and helps parents choose. Put the age on every product page and use it to build your collections.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
