Step by step

How to sell plants online in 6 steps.

  1. Check the rules before you ship

Many US states ask plant sellers to hold a nursery or plant dealer license, and some restrict plants coming in from other states. In the EU and Great Britain, plants sent to customers usually need a plant passport from a registered business. Start with your state or national plant health office.

  2. Offer sizes the way you grow them

Pot size, cutting or established plant: make these options on one product, each with its own price and stock. Give the pot diameter and the plant’s rough height, since “medium” means different things to different growers.

  3. Photograph the plant they’ll get

Use photos of your own plants at the size you ship. For rare or variegated plants, photograph each plant and sell it with a stock of one.

  4. Put care notes on every listing

Light, water, humidity, growth habit and whether it’s toxic to cats and dogs, in the same order each time. Ask the assistant to add a care section to every plant at once, then check it.

  5. Ship with the weather

Ship early in the week so plants don’t sit in a depot over the weekend, add heat packs or insulation in cold months, and say on your shipping page when you pause. Update your delivery estimates when the season changes.

  6. Get ready before spring

Spring is the busiest time for garden plants. List seedlings and perennials before your local last-frost date, and keep houseplants and plant gifts going for the rest of the year.

Built in

A shop made for plants, not a blank template.

  • Rare plants that sell once

Photograph each rare plant and give it a stock of one. When it sells it shows as sold out, which also tells your followers to watch for the next drop.

  • A plant subscription on Growth

A monthly plant or cutting can be a subscription billed by Stripe on the Growth plan, with an optional free trial. Subscribers see their plan in their account.

  • Shipping you control

Choose the countries you ship to and set up to five fixed rates with delivery estimates. Add the tracking number when a box leaves, and the customer gets a shipping email with the link.

  • Office and event orders on request

Offices, cafés and wedding planners can ask for larger plant orders through a request form, which lands in your Inbox for you to quote.

Good to know

  • Protected plants need permits abroad

Many orchids and cacti, and some carnivorous plants, are listed under CITES, the treaty on trade in wild species, so sending them to another country can need permits even when you grew them yourself. Check before you offer them abroad.

  • Say what happens if a plant arrives damaged

Many plant shops ask for a photo within a day or two of delivery and then replace or refund. Write your policy on the shipping page so customers know it before they buy.

  • Pet-safe matters to buyers

Plenty of plant buyers have cats or dogs. Say clearly when a plant is toxic to pets and make a pet-safe collection, using a trusted source such as the ASPCA’s plant list.

General information to help you get started, not legal advice. Rules differ by country, state and product, so check the ones that apply to you.

Questions

Good to know

Do I need a license to sell plants online?

Often, yes. Many US states require a nursery or plant dealer license, and in the EU and UK you usually need to register with the plant health authority before you send plants to customers. Check with your state department of agriculture or national plant health office.

How do I ship plants in winter?

Ship at the start of the week, wrap the plant and pot, add a heat pack for the journey and avoid the coldest days. Many sellers pause shipping during hard freezes and say so on the home page.

Can I ship plants to other states or countries?

Within the US most plants can travel between states, but some states restrict certain plants or ask for inspection. Shipping abroad usually needs a phytosanitary certificate. On Cornerrr you choose exactly which countries you ship to.

Can I sell cuttings as well as whole plants?

Yes. Make cutting, rooted cutting and pot sizes options on one product, each with its own price and stock count, so buyers pick the stage they want.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
