Step by step

How to sell fabric online in 6 steps.

  1. Choose your cut unit

Sell by the half yard or half meter, or whatever your minimum cut is, and let the quantity be the number of units. Say on every page that several units are cut as one continuous piece.

  2. Give width, weight and fiber

Usable width (quilting cotton is often 44 to 45 inches, apparel fabric 54 to 60), weight in gsm or ounces, fiber content, stretch for knits and care instructions. Sewists can’t plan a project without them.

  3. Show scale and drape

Photograph each print next to a ruler or a spool for scale, draped over a form or a chair, and close up on the weave. A print that looks bold flat can be tiny in real life.

  4. Sell precuts and bundles

Fat quarters, charm packs and bundles from one collection suit quilters who want variety. Make each bundle its own product with its own photos and stock.

  5. Offer swatches

A swatch pack of new arrivals lets customers feel the hand of a fabric and see the true color before they order several meters. Many buy their lengths after the swatches arrive.

  6. Pair fabric with patterns

Suggest fabrics for the patterns you stock, and the other way around, with yardage for each size. Kits of a pattern with matching fabric take the guesswork away for beginners.

Built in

A shop made for fabric, not a blank template.

  • Stock in the units you cut

Track stock in half yards or half meters for each fabric. Stock goes down as orders are paid, and checkout stops when the bolt runs out.

  • Bundles as their own products

A fat quarter bundle or charm pack has its own photos, price and stock, so you can sell it next to the same fabrics by the meter.

  • Kits of pattern and fabric

Sell a kit with the fabric, notions and a printed pattern as one product, with sizes as options if the yardage changes with size.

  • Flat parcels, fixed rates

Folded fabric ships flat and light. Set fixed rates with delivery estimates for the countries you ship to, and a free-shipping code above an order amount you choose.

Good to know

  • Fiber content before purchase

In the EU and UK, textile products sold to consumers need their fiber composition stated, and for online sales it should be visible before someone buys. Give it on every fabric page.

  • Returns on cut lengths

Many fabric shops don’t take back cut lengths. In the EU and UK online buyers usually have 14 days to cancel, so ask an advisor whether your cut fabric is exempt before you write “no returns”.

  • Say how you cut

State your cutting tolerance and what you do when a length has a flaw or comes up short, such as adding a little extra. Quilters plan to the inch.

General information to help you get started, not legal advice. Rules differ by country, state and product, so check the ones that apply to you.

Questions

Good to know

How do I sell fabric by the yard on my website?

Make the product a half yard or a full yard, track stock in that unit, and let customers choose how many. Say clearly that multiple units are cut as one piece, so three half yards arrive as one and a half yards.

Should I sell fat quarters and precuts?

If you sell to quilters, yes. Fat quarters and charm packs let them collect a whole range without buying meters of each, and bundles are easy gifts for sewists.

Can customers order swatches before they buy?

Yes. Sell swatch packs or single swatches as low-priced products with their own stock. Many shops refund the swatch price with a discount code on the next order.

Can I sell sewing patterns next to my fabric?

Yes. Sell printed patterns with stock and shipping, and PDF patterns as downloads on any paid plan, so a customer can buy the pattern and the fabric in one order.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
