Step by step

How to sell makeup online in 6 steps.

  1. Make each shade an option

List a lipstick or a blush once, with every shade as an option that has its own stock and SKU. Buyers compare shades on one page, and you see which shades sell out first.

  2. Swatch on more than one skin tone

Every makeup buyer is asking whether a shade will work on them. Photograph each one swatched on light, medium and deep skin, in daylight and without filters, and say on the page that the photos are unedited.

  3. Describe undertone and finish

Give every shade a short line: warm or cool, matte, satin or shimmer, sheer or full. “Soft brick red, satin finish” helps more than a clever shade name on its own.

  4. Answer the returns question up front

Opened makeup usually can’t be resold. Say plainly what you take back (unopened, within a set time) on a returns page. Cornerrr can draft that policy for you to check and edit.

  5. Sell minis and sets for first orders

A mini lipstick or a three-shade set lets a new customer try your formula without gambling on a full-size shade. Price them so stepping up to full size feels natural.

  6. Launch new shades on a date

Indie makeup sells in drops. Announce the launch date on your home page, collect newsletter sign-ups ahead of it, and export the list to send your launch email from the tool you already use.

Built in

A shop made for makeup, not a blank template.

  • Shades with their own stock

Every shade has its own stock and SKU. Checkout stops when one runs out, or you can turn on “sell when out of stock” for a shade you’re about to remake.

  • Policy pages drafted for you

Cornerrr drafts refund, shipping and privacy pages from your answers, as drafts to check, not legal advice. Add your own shade guide page if customers often ask for help matching.

  • Launch discount codes

On any paid plan, make a code with start and end dates, a usage limit or one use per customer, so a new palette gets a short, fair promotion.

  • Taxes worked out at checkout

Stripe Tax can calculate sales tax or VAT on each order once you turn it on in Stripe, and buyers pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or the local methods you choose.

Good to know

  • Color additives are tightly controlled

In the US, every color additive in a cosmetic must be approved by the FDA for that use, some need batch certification, and not every approved color is allowed around the eyes. The EU and UK keep their own lists of permitted colorants. Check every pigment with your supplier.

  • MoCRA and eye products

Under the US MoCRA law, most cosmetic makers register their facility and list their products with the FDA. Some small businesses are exempt, but not for products that regularly touch the eye’s mucous membrane, such as many eyeliners and mascaras. Check the FDA’s guidance.

  • Selling to the EU or UK

Makeup sold there needs a local Responsible Person, a safety assessment and a notification (CPNP in the EU, SCPN in Great Britain) before it goes on sale. Until you’re set up, leave those countries off your shipping list.

  • Vegan and cruelty-free mean different things

“Vegan” is about ingredients; “cruelty-free” is about animal testing. Say exactly which you mean, and only show a certification logo once you hold that certification.

General information to help you get started, not legal advice. Rules differ by country, state and product, so check the ones that apply to you.

Cornerrr writes your pages, adds your products or services, and picks the colours, fonts and look. It takes about a minute.

  3. Step 3: Connect payments

Link a Stripe account, or create one in a few minutes. Your customers pay you directly.

  4. Step 4: You’re live

Questions

Good to know

Can I sell makeup I make at home?

It depends on where you sell. In the US you answer for safety, approved colors and the label, and may need to register under MoCRA. In the EU and UK you need a safety assessment and a Responsible Person first. Check the rules before you take orders.

How do I help customers choose a shade online?

Show swatches on several skin tones, describe the undertone and finish, and offer minis or a sample set. On Cornerrr you can add a shade guide page and link to it from every product description.

Do I have to accept returns on opened makeup?

Many brands don’t, for hygiene reasons, and in the EU the usual right to cancel an online order doesn’t apply to sealed hygiene products once they’re unsealed. Whatever you decide, put it on your returns page and near the cart.

Can I sell makeup to salons at trade prices?

Yes, as a request. Add a wholesale product or page with “price on request”. Salons and makeup artists send their details through the form, it lands in your Inbox, and you reply with your trade terms by email.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
