Step by step

How to sell skincare online in 6 steps.

  1. Check the rules before your first sale

Skincare is regulated as a cosmetic in the US, the UK and the EU. Find out what your country asks of you (registration, safety records, what goes on the label) before you launch, and only ship to the countries where you’re ready.

  2. Organize by routine step and skin type

Group products the way people shop for them: cleanse, treat, moisturize, then dry, oily or sensitive skin. Keep the words cosmetic. “Softens dry skin” describes a cosmetic; “clears acne” describes a drug.

  3. Put the full ingredient list on every product

List every ingredient in label order, using the INCI names, plus the size, how to use it and how long it keeps once opened. Shoppers with sensitive skin read this before they read anything else.

  4. Photograph texture, not just the jar

Show the jar or bottle front-on, a swatch of the texture on skin or glass, and the product in a hand for scale. Cornerrr can write a first listing from your photo, which you then check and edit.

  5. Give first-time buyers a small way in

Travel sizes and discovery sets lower the risk of a first order from a brand nobody has tried. Make them products with their own stock, and mention the full size in each description.

  6. Plan for refills and reorders

Refill pouches, larger sizes and routine sets bring customers back. On the Growth plan a refill every one, two or three months can be a subscription that Stripe bills for you.

Built in

A shop made for skincare, not a blank template.

  • Sizes and stock per product

Each product can have sizes, scents or skin-type versions as options, each with its own price, SKU and stock. Checkout stops when a batch sells out.

  • Descriptions you approve

Ask the assistant to write or rewrite your product descriptions in your voice. Each suggestion is yours to apply or undo, so you can read it for drug-style claims first.

  • Ship only where you’re ready

Choose the countries you ship to and set fixed rates for them, so you don’t take orders from places where you haven’t met the local cosmetics rules yet.

  • Spa and private-label requests

Mark wholesale or private-label enquiries “price on request”. Spas and shops send their details through a form, and the request lands in your Inbox for you to answer by email.

Good to know

  • US cosmetics rules

The FDA doesn’t approve cosmetics before sale (color additives aside), but the 2022 law known as MoCRA added facility registration, product listing, safety records and reporting of serious reactions. Some small businesses are exempt from registration and listing, not from the rest. Check the FDA’s current guidance.

  • EU and UK cosmetics rules

Before skincare goes on sale in the EU, a Responsible Person based there must hold a safety assessment and product file and notify the product on the CPNP portal. Great Britain has a similar system with a UK Responsible Person and SCPN notification. Both apply when you ship there from abroad.

  • Your claims decide what you sell

In the US, a product that claims to clear acne, protect from the sun or change how the skin works can count as a drug, with very different rules. Keep claims to how skin looks and feels unless a product is approved for more.

  • Batch numbers and shelf life

Put a batch number and a use-by date or period-after-opening symbol on every label, and keep a record of which batch went into which order. If a customer reports a reaction, you can trace it.

General information to help you get started, not legal advice. Rules differ by country, state and product, so check the ones that apply to you.

How it works

From a few words to a shop that takes payments, live.

  1. Step 1: Describe your business

A sentence or two is enough: what you do, who it’s for and how people buy from you.

  2. Step 2: We build it while you watch

Cornerrr writes your pages, adds your products or services, and picks the colours, fonts and look. It takes about a minute.

  3. Step 3: Connect payments

Link a Stripe account, or create one in a few minutes. Your customers pay you directly.

  4. Step 4: You’re live

Publish on your free Cornerrr web address, or use your own. Change anything later by asking.

Questions

Good to know

Do I need FDA approval to sell skincare online?

No. The FDA doesn’t approve cosmetics before they go on sale, apart from color additives. You are still responsible for safety and labels, and under MoCRA most makers must register and list their products unless a small-business exemption applies. Check the FDA’s guidance for your products.

Can I sell homemade skincare made in my kitchen?

In the US, federal law doesn’t forbid it, but you answer for safety and labeling, and your state or city may have its own rules. In the EU and UK every product needs a safety assessment and a Responsible Person, whatever the size of your kitchen.

How do I show ingredients on my skincare website?

Put the ingredient list in label order in each product’s description, with the size and how to use it. On Cornerrr you can ask the assistant to add a “How to use” line to every product at once, then apply or undo it.

Can customers get skincare refills on a schedule?

Yes, on the Growth plan. A refill every one, two or three months is billed automatically by Stripe, and subscribers see their plan in their account. To change or stop it, they write to you.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
