Step by step

How to sell perfume online in 6 steps.

  1. Lead with a sample set

Few people buy a full bottle of a scent they’ve never smelled. Put a discovery set of small vials first on the home page, and say in each description which full sizes it leads to.

  2. Describe the notes and how it wears

Give the top, heart and base notes, then a sentence on how it wears: fresh and green or warm and woody, close to the skin or bold. Mention the concentration, such as eau de parfum.

  3. Photograph the bottle and the mood

Shoot the bottle against a plain background, then once with a few raw materials (wood, citrus peel, flowers) that hint at the notes. Keep the label readable in at least one photo.

  4. Offer sizes as options

List each scent once, with sample, travel and full sizes as options and stock for each. Solid perfumes and roll-ons can be options too, or products of their own.

  5. Check how your carrier takes perfume

Alcohol-based perfume is flammable, and many postal services and couriers take it by ground only or not at all abroad. Set your shipping countries and rates to match what your carrier accepts.

  6. Take bespoke work as requests

If you make custom scents or run blending sessions, list them with “price on request”. Ask which scents the customer already loves and what the perfume is for, then reply by email.

Built in

A shop made for perfume, not a blank template.

  • Scent pages that compare well

Every scent gets a page with its notes, sizes as options and its own stock. Put your scents in collections such as woody, floral or fresh so people find their family fast.

  • Bespoke requests in your Inbox

Custom perfume and private sessions can hide their price and cart button. Customers send a request, it lands in your Inbox and by email, and you answer from there.

  • A code from sample to bottle

On any paid plan, make a once-per-customer discount code for a full bottle, with an end date, and print it on a card inside every sample set.

  • A checkout buyers abroad can use

Checkout is hosted by Stripe and shown in your website’s language (Stripe has about 40), with cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and the local methods you turn on.

Good to know

  • Perfume is a cosmetic

In the US, FDA cosmetics rules apply, including MoCRA registration and listing unless a small-business exemption covers you. In the EU and UK you need a Responsible Person, a safety assessment and CPNP or SCPN notification, and the label must name certain fragrance allergens.

  • Don’t borrow famous names

Calling a scent “inspired by” a famous perfume, or listing which designer scent it smells like, can lead to trademark trouble, especially in the UK and EU. Describe your own notes instead.

  • IFRA limits

Most perfumers follow the IFRA Standards, the industry’s limits on how much of certain materials can go into each kind of product. Your safety assessor or supplier can tell you whether a formula fits.

General information to help you get started, not legal advice. Rules differ by country, state and product, so check the ones that apply to you.

How it works

From a few words to a shop that takes payments, live.

  1. Step 1: Describe your business

A sentence or two is enough: what you do, who it’s for and how people buy from you.

  2. Step 2: We build it while you watch

Cornerrr writes your pages, adds your products or services, and picks the colours, fonts and look. It takes about a minute.

  3. Step 3: Connect payments

Link a Stripe account, or create one in a few minutes. Your customers pay you directly.

  4. Step 4: You’re live

Publish on your free Cornerrr web address, or use your own. Change anything later by asking.

Questions

Good to know

Can I ship perfume by mail?

Often, with limits. Perfume that contains alcohol is a flammable liquid, so USPS, for example, only takes it by ground within the US and not abroad, and couriers have their own rules. Check with your carrier before you choose shipping countries.

How do I sell perfume samples online?

Make a discovery set its own product, or add a sample size as an option on each scent. On Cornerrr every option has its own price and stock, so samples and full bottles sell from the same page.

Do I need a license to make and sell perfume?

There’s rarely a license for perfume itself, but cosmetics rules apply: safety, labeling and, in the US, MoCRA registration unless you’re exempt. In the EU and UK, a safety assessment comes before the first sale.

Can customers order a bespoke perfume from my website?

Yes. List bespoke perfume with “price on request”: the customer tells you the scents they love and the occasion, the request lands in your Inbox, and you reply with options and a price by email.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
