Step by step

How to sell lip balm online in 6 steps.

  1. Sell packs, not just singles

One tube rarely covers the cost of packing and postage. Offer three- and five-packs alongside singles, and a mixed-flavor pack for people who can’t decide.

  2. Make flavors and containers options

List a balm once, with flavors and tube, tin or slide tin as options, each with its own SKU and stock. Shoppers see the whole range on one page.

  3. Say what it’s made of

Beeswax or plant waxes, butters, oils and flavor: list it all, and mark vegan balms clearly. People choosing for allergies or diet read the ingredients first.

  4. Photograph it at real size

Lip balm is small, so show it in a hand and next to its pack, with one close-up of the balm inside the tin. Cornerrr can turn your photo into a first draft listing.

  5. Ship with the weather in mind

Balm softens in hot vans and mailboxes. In summer, ship early in the week, mention it on your shipping page, and use a padded mailer so tins don’t dent.

  6. Offer custom labels as requests

Weddings, showers, teams and companies order balms with their own label. List custom orders with “price on request” and ask for the quantity, date and design idea in the form.

A shop made for lip balm, not a blank template.

  • Singles and packs, each with stock

Singles and multipacks can be separate products, each with its own stock and SKU, and checkout stops on any of them that sells out.

  • Custom orders in your Inbox

Custom-label balms are kept out of the cart. Couples and companies send the quantity, date and design idea through a form, and you reply with a quote by email.

  • Free shipping over an amount

On any paid plan, a free-shipping discount code with a minimum order nudges a single tube up to a pack.

  • Descriptions in your voice

Ask the assistant to write each flavor’s description, or to add a “vegan” line to every plant-wax balm, then apply or undo the change.

Good to know

  • SPF turns a balm into a drug

In the US, a lip balm with SPF is a sunscreen, an over-the-counter drug with its own testing and labeling rules, and claims that a balm relieves chapped lips can count as drug claims too. Plain moisturizing balms are cosmetics.

  • Cosmetics rules still apply

Moisturizing balms follow FDA cosmetics rules including MoCRA in the US, and need a Responsible Person, a safety assessment and notification before sale in the EU and UK. Tinted balms need colors approved for use on the lips.

  • Use lip-safe flavors

Lip products get swallowed in tiny amounts, so use flavor oils and essential oils that your supplier sells as lip-safe, at the levels they give.

General information to help you get started, not legal advice. Rules differ by country, state and product, so check the ones that apply to you.

Questions

Good to know

Can I sell lip balm with SPF?

You can, but in the US it then counts as a sunscreen drug, with testing, Drug Facts labeling and FDA registration, so most small makers sell balms without SPF. In the EU and UK, an SPF claim must be backed by standard tests.

How do I make lip balm worth shipping?

Sell packs and sets alongside singles, and offer free shipping above an order amount with a discount code. On Cornerrr you set fixed shipping rates per country, so a padded mailer of balms costs what you decide.

Can I take custom lip balm orders from companies?

Yes. Companies order branded balms for events and client gifts. List them with “price on request” so they send the quantity, date and logo; the request lands in your Inbox and you reply by email with a price and a label proof.

Will lip balm melt in the mail?

It can on hot days. Ship early in the week so parcels don’t sit over a weekend, use tins or tubes with snug caps, and say on your shipping page how you handle heat waves.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
