Step by step

How to sell essential oils online in 6 steps.

  1. Describe the scent, not a remedy

Say what an oil smells like, where it comes from and how people use it in a diffuser or a blend. Leave out claims about sleep, mood, pain or illness: in the US those can make an oil a drug, and in the UK and EU medical claims are for licensed medicines only.

  2. Give the facts serious buyers check

For each oil, list the common and botanical name, the part of the plant, how it was extracted, the country of origin and the batch number. People who know oils compare these first.

  3. Put safety notes on every product

Say to dilute before using on skin, to keep oils away from children and pets, and that some citrus oils make skin more sensitive to sunlight. Link a page on safe use from every product.

  4. Use sizes and blends as options

List each oil once, with bottle sizes as options and stock for each. Give your own blends their own products, names and ingredient lists.

  5. Make kits for beginners

A starter set of a few oils with a carrier oil or diffuser helps people who don’t know where to begin, and it makes an easy gift.

  6. Check shipping before you list

Many essential oils count as flammable liquids for transport. Ask your carrier what they accept, especially by air or abroad, before you choose your shipping countries and rates.

Built in

A shop made for essential oils, not a blank template.

  • Room for the facts

Every product has a description you control, with sizes as options and a SKU and stock for each, so the botanical name and batch sit right beside the price.

  • Words you review first

The assistant can draft descriptions from your notes or a photo. Nothing changes until you apply it, so you can strike any line that sounds like a health claim.

  • Shipping countries you choose

Ship only where your carrier accepts your oils, with fixed rates and delivery estimates you set for each.

  • Bulk orders on request

Spas, candle makers and soap makers can ask for bulk sizes through a price-on-request form, and the request lands in your Inbox for you to answer by email.

Good to know

  • No health claims

In the US, the FDA treats an oil sold to relieve, prevent or treat a condition as a drug, and the FTC acts against unproven health claims. In the UK and EU, medical claims are reserved for licensed medicines. Describe scent and use, and nothing more.

  • Hazard labels for neat oils

In the UK and EU, many neat essential oils are classed as hazardous chemicals, so their labels need CLP hazard pictograms and statements, and some need child-resistant caps and a tactile warning. Check each oil’s safety data sheet.

  • Oils for the skin are cosmetics

A roller blend or body oil meant for the skin follows cosmetics rules: FDA rules including MoCRA in the US, and a safety assessment, a Responsible Person and notification before sale in the EU and UK.

  • Skip “therapeutic grade”

“Therapeutic grade” and similar labels aren’t official standards. Show quality with the botanical name, the batch and test reports such as GC-MS results, which you can share when customers ask.

General information to help you get started, not legal advice. Rules differ by country, state and product, so check the ones that apply to you.

Questions

Good to know

Can I say my essential oils help with sleep or stress?

It’s safest not to. The FDA gives claims like these as examples that can make an oil a drug, and the UK and EU only allow medical claims for licensed medicines. Describe the scent and how people use it instead.

Can I ship essential oils in the mail?

Often, but check your carrier’s rules first, since many oils count as flammable liquids. On Cornerrr you choose the countries you ship to and set fixed rates, and you add the tracking number to each order so your customer gets a shipping email.

What should an essential oil product page say?

The common and botanical names, part of the plant, extraction method, origin, batch, bottle size and safety notes. On Cornerrr you can ask the assistant to add the same safety paragraph to every oil at once.

Do I need a license to sell essential oils?

Usually not for the oils themselves, though you may need to register a business. What changes the rules is how an oil is meant to be used: oils for the skin follow cosmetics rules, and oils sold with health claims are treated as drugs or medicines.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
