Step by step

How to sell pet treats online in 6 steps.

  1. Register before you sell

In the US, most states treat dog treats as commercial feed, so you may need a license and to register each product, and FDA rules apply too. In the UK and EU, pet food makers register as a feed business. Start with your state or local feed office.

  2. Label every treat properly

US pet food labels usually need the product name, net weight, minimum protein and fat and maximum fiber and moisture, ingredients in order of weight, your name and address, and for treats a line saying they’re for intermittent or supplemental feeding. Put the same facts on the product page.

  3. Be exact about ingredients

Owners of dogs with allergies read every ingredient. Say whether a treat contains chicken, grain or peanut butter, check that any peanut butter is xylitol-free, and keep recipes stable so repeat buyers aren’t surprised.

  4. Sell by bag size and dog size

Make bag sizes and treat sizes options: small dog, large dog, training bites. Give the treat count or weight so owners can compare.

  5. Take birthday cake orders

Dog birthday cakes and “gotcha day” cakes work well as “price on request”. Owners send the date, the dog’s name and any allergies, and you reply with a quote.

  6. Start a monthly treat box

A treat box billed by Stripe on the Growth plan gives you regular orders between holidays. Change the flavors each month and list the allergens that might appear.

Built in

A shop made for pet treats, not a blank template.

  • Treat boxes as subscriptions

On the Growth plan a treat box every month or every two weeks is billed by Stripe automatically, and customers see their subscription in their account.

  • Wholesale for groomers and shops

Groomers, dog daycares and pet shops can ask for wholesale pricing through a request form. It lands in your Inbox, and you reply with a price list by email.

  • Bag sizes with their own stock

Each bag size can have its own price and stock count, so a sold-out bag of training bites stops selling while the large bags carry on.

  • Ingredient lines on every product

Ask the assistant to add the ingredients and feeding note to every treat at once, then compare each one with the label on your bags before you apply it.

Good to know

  • Keep health claims off the bag

In the US, saying a treat prevents or relieves a condition, such as joint problems or anxiety, can lead the FDA to regard it as a drug. Stick to ingredients, texture and taste.

  • Shelf life and shipping

Baked treats need to be dry enough to keep and packed to stay fresh. Test how long each recipe lasts, put a best-by date on the bag and ship soft treats only in cool weather.

  • Selling across state lines

Many states require registration before treats are sold to their residents, even online. Shipping on Cornerrr is set by country, so say on your shipping page which states you can send treats to.

General information to help you get started, not legal advice. Rules differ by country, state and product, so check the ones that apply to you.

Questions

Good to know

Do I need a license to sell homemade dog treats?

In most US states, yes: dog treats count as commercial feed, so you may need a feed license and product registration, and some states don’t allow treats made in a home kitchen. Check with your state department of agriculture.

What has to be on a dog treat label?

Typically the product name, the words “dog treats”, net weight, the protein, fat, fiber and moisture figures, ingredients in order of weight, your name and address, and a feeding statement. Your state feed office can confirm the details.

Can I sell dog treats at markets and online?

Yes. Your Cornerrr website sells online with stock tracking, and your market dates can go on the home page. The same labeling rules apply in both places.

Can I sell cat treats as well as dog treats?

Yes, in their own collection. Cats have different needs, and an ingredient that’s fine for dogs isn’t always fine for cats, so label each treat with the animal it’s made for.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
