Step by step

How to sell cakes online in 6 steps.

  1. Offer a short list of set cakes

Pick four to six cakes you can make any week, with sizes and flavors as options. A parent who can order a chocolate cake for Saturday in two minutes won’t wait a day for a quote.

  2. Put tiered and themed cakes on request

Wedding, tiered and character cakes change with every order. Hide the price, ask for the date, the number of guests and the theme, and invite a photo of their idea by email. Show past cakes so people see your range.

  3. Say how much notice you need

Most cake makers need a few days for a set cake and weeks for a wedding. Put both on the home page and the request form, and set a cake’s stock to zero when your weekend is full.

  4. Describe your delivery area plainly

Frosted cakes rarely survive the mail, so most cake makers deliver locally. Name the towns or distance you cover on a delivery page and set a delivery rate. Rates can’t be limited to a ZIP code or postcode, so the page has to make the area clear.

  5. Photograph a slice too

A side view of the whole cake and one photo of a cut slice show height, layers and filling. Real cakes you’ve made sell better than stock photos of someone else’s.

  6. Write a serving guide

List how many people each size serves, in plain portions, and how to store the cake until the party. Parents ordering for a birthday look for that number first.

Built in

A shop made for cakes, not a blank template.

  • Sizes and flavors with their own prices

A six-inch and a ten-inch cake can be options of one product with different prices and stock, so you can cap how many large cakes you take each week.

  • Custom cake requests

Every request, with the date, guests, theme and flavors, lands in your Inbox and in your email. You reply with a quote, and nothing is charged through the request form.

  • Delivery rates and estimates

Set a local delivery rate with a delivery estimate, and a separate postage rate for the cakes that travel, like loaf cakes and tasting boxes.

  • Allergen and dietary notes

Ask the assistant to add an allergens line and a note about gluten-free or vegan options to every cake at once, then check each change and apply it.

Good to know

  • Cream and fresh fruit change the rules

Cakes with cream, custard, cream cheese or fresh fruit fillings need refrigeration, and most US cottage food laws exclude them, so you may need a licensed kitchen. In the UK and EU every cake business registers with the local authority. Check your local rules.

  • Toppers and decorations

Wires, dowels, plastic toppers and fresh flowers must be food-safe where they touch the cake, and some flowers are toxic. Tell customers in writing what to remove before serving.

  • Plan for wedding season

Weddings cluster from late spring to early fall, and graduation and holiday cakes come in waves. Decide how many large cakes you can make each weekend and hold to it.

General information to help you get started, not legal advice. Rules differ by country, state and product, so check the ones that apply to you.

How it works

  1. Step 1: Describe your business

A sentence or two is enough: what you do, who it’s for and how people buy from you.

Cornerrr writes your pages, adds your products or services, and picks the colours, fonts and look. It takes about a minute.

  3. Step 3: Connect payments

Link a Stripe account, or create one in a few minutes. Your customers pay you directly.

  4. Step 4: You’re live

Publish on your free Cornerrr web address, or use your own. Change anything later by asking.

Questions

Good to know

Can I sell cakes online without a bakery?

In many US states you can sell some cakes from home under cottage food laws, usually without cream or fresh fruit fillings. In the UK and EU you register your home kitchen as a food business. Check with your state or council first.

Can I ship cakes by mail?

Most frosted and filled cakes don’t travel well by post. Loaf cakes, pound cakes, cake jars and tasting boxes can, if sealed and packed tightly. Keep celebration cakes for local delivery.

How do customers order a custom cake on my website?

They open your custom cakes page, fill in the date, number of guests and theme, and send it. The request lands in your Cornerrr Inbox and your email, and you reply with a quote.

Can I stop taking cake orders for a busy weekend?

Yes. Set the stock of your set cakes to zero and checkout stops for them. Ask the assistant to add a line to the home page saying when orders open again.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
