Step by step

How to sell natural cleaning products online in 6 steps.

  1. Keep to cleaning claims

If a product claims to kill germs, bacteria or viruses, the US treats it as a pesticide that needs EPA registration, and the EU and UK regulate it as a biocide. Most small makers describe what a product cleans, not what it kills.

  2. List every ingredient

Buyers of natural cleaners read the ingredients. California requires cleaning products sold there to disclose ingredients on the label and online, and EU detergent rules ask for ingredient information too.

  3. Add hazard warnings where needed

Even natural ingredients such as essential oils, citric acid or washing soda can need hazard warnings, under CLP rules in the EU and UK and under US rules for hazardous household products. Check each formula before you label it.

  4. Sell a starter and its refills

Make the glass or aluminum starter bottle one product and the refill another, with sizes as options. Link them in each description so buyers know which refill fits.

  5. Turn refills into a subscription

On the Growth plan, a refill every month or every two months can be a subscription billed by Stripe. Say how many washes or sprays a refill gives, so buyers pick the right interval.

  6. Ship liquids safely

Use leak-proof caps, a bag around each bottle and fixed shipping rates that cover the weight of glass and liquid. Concentrates and powders are lighter and cheaper to send.

Refill shops and cleaning businesses can ask for bulk sizes through a request form, and you answer from your Inbox with a quote.

  • Free-shipping codes for regulars

Create a free-shipping discount code for refill customers, with a minimum order, a usage limit and an end date if you want one.

Good to know

  • Avoid “non-toxic” and “chemical-free”

Everything is made of chemicals, and “non-toxic” is hard to prove. Say what’s in the product and what it leaves out instead, such as “no added fragrance”.

  • Shipping hazardous goods

Some cleaning products count as dangerous goods for carriers, especially strong acids, strong alkalis or anything flammable. Check your carrier’s rules before you mail liquids.

  • Green claims are watched

Regulators in the US, EU and UK look closely at environmental claims. Say “plastic-free refill pouch” or “biodegradable surfactants” only if you can show the evidence.

General information to help you get started, not legal advice. Rules differ by country, state and product, so check the ones that apply to you.

Questions

Good to know

Do I need approval to sell homemade cleaning products?

Plain cleaners usually don’t need approval before sale, but labeling and hazard rules still apply, and germ-killing claims need registration. In the EU, mixtures classed as hazardous also need a poison center notification and a UFI code on the label. Check the rules where you sell.

How do I sell cleaning product refills online?

Sell the starter bottle once and refill pouches or concentrates as their own products, or as a refill subscription on the Growth plan. Cornerrr tracks stock for each size and sends the customer a shipping email when a refill goes out.

What should a natural cleaning product label include?

Typically the product name, what it’s for, how to use it, the ingredients, any hazard warnings, the net quantity and your business name and address. Rules differ by country, so check what your market requires.

Can I ship cleaning products abroad?

Often, as long as they aren’t classed as dangerous goods. Check each carrier’s rules and the labeling rules of the country you ship to, and only add that country on Cornerrr once you’re ready.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
