What is Pay by Bank?

Pay by Bank is an open banking payment: the customer picks their bank at checkout, approves the payment in their banking app or online banking, and the money moves from their account to yours. Through Stripe it works for customers in the UK, Ireland, Germany, France and Finland, in pounds or euros. France and Germany are still in a private preview at Stripe.

How your customers pay

  1. Choose Pay by Bank

At your Stripe checkout, in pounds or euros, the customer selects Pay by Bank.

  2. Pick their bank

They choose their bank from a list and are sent to its app or website.

  3. Approve the exact amount

They sign in as usual and approve the payment, which arrives filled in. There are no card details, sort codes or IBANs to type.

  4. Back to your website

They return to your website and see that the payment is complete. Cornerrr marks the order paid once Stripe confirms it.

Why offer it

Why businesses take Pay by Bank

  • Nothing to type

The customer approves inside their bank, so there are no mistyped card numbers or account details, and no expired cards.

  • No chargebacks

The customer authenticates with their bank, so there is no dispute process that can pull a payment back as a chargeback.

  • Payments that match orders

Unlike a bank transfer where the customer copies your details and a reference by hand, Pay by Bank fills them in, so payments line up with orders.

  • Refunds to the same account

Refunds go back to the bank account that paid, for up to two years after the sale.

Set up

Turn on Pay by Bank in three steps.

  1. Connect your Stripe account

Link the Stripe account you already have, or create one in a few minutes from Cornerrr. Payments go straight to it; Cornerrr adds no transaction fee.

  2. Turn the method on in Stripe

In your Stripe Dashboard, open the payment method settings and turn it on. Stripe may ask a few questions about your business first.

  3. It shows at checkout

Your Cornerrr checkout is Stripe Checkout, so customers who can use the method see it automatically when their country and your currency match.

Questions

Good to know

How do I turn on Pay by Bank with Cornerrr?

Connect your Stripe account, then turn on Pay by Bank in your Stripe Dashboard’s payment method settings. If your store sells in pounds or euros, Cornerrr’s Stripe Checkout offers it automatically to eligible customers in the supported countries. For customers in France and Germany, ask Stripe to join the preview first.

Can I use Pay by Bank for subscriptions?

Not on Cornerrr today: Stripe’s Checkout takes Pay by Bank for one-time payments only. For subscriptions on the Growth plan, Bacs Direct Debit is the usual choice in the UK, and SEPA Direct Debit in euro countries.

What if the bank is slow to send the money?

Rarely, a payment is approved but the bank doesn’t deliver the money within Stripe’s window. The payment then fails, and if the money arrives later, Stripe returns it to the customer automatically. Cornerrr only marks an order paid once Stripe confirms it.

How long do Pay by Bank refunds take?

They usually arrive by the next business day but can take up to seven days to show as complete. You can refund in full or in part for up to two years.

Is there a limit per payment?

Yes. Stripe sets a default maximum for each Pay by Bank payment. If you sell larger items, such as furniture or art, you can ask Stripe support to raise it.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
