What is Multibanco?

Multibanco is a Portuguese voucher payment. At checkout the customer receives an entity number, a reference and the amount, then pays outside your website, in online banking or at a Multibanco ATM. Because paying starts a bank transfer, confirmation can take several days, longer over weekends, and the voucher expires seven days after it is created.

How your customers pay

  1. Choose Multibanco

At your Stripe checkout, priced in euros, the customer picks Multibanco.

  2. Get the voucher

Stripe shows a voucher page with the entity, reference and amount. Turn on Stripe’s Multibanco instruction emails so customers get the details by email too.

  3. Pay at an ATM or online

They pay with those details in their banking app or at a Multibanco ATM, any time within seven days.

  4. Confirmed when it arrives

When the money reaches Stripe, which can take a few days, Cornerrr marks the order paid, lowers stock and emails the confirmation.

Why offer it

Why businesses take Multibanco

  • For customers who avoid cards online

Shoppers who don’t want to type card details on a website can still buy from you, through a bank or an ATM they already use.

  • A format Portugal knows

Multibanco references are used in Portugal to pay all kinds of bills, so a voucher with an entity and reference won’t surprise local customers.

  • No chargebacks

The customer sends the money themselves, so Multibanco has no dispute process that can pull a payment back later.

  • Quick refunds

Refunds usually reach the customer’s bank within a day, and you can refund all or part of a payment for up to 365 days.

Set up

Turn on Multibanco in three steps.

  1. Connect your Stripe account

Link the Stripe account you already have, or create one in a few minutes from Cornerrr. Payments go straight to it; Cornerrr adds no transaction fee.

  2. Turn the method on in Stripe

In your Stripe Dashboard, open the payment method settings and turn it on. Stripe may ask a few questions about your business first.

  3. It shows at checkout

Your Cornerrr checkout is Stripe Checkout, so customers who can use the method see it automatically when their country and your currency match.

Questions

Good to know

How do I offer Multibanco with Cornerrr?

Connect your Stripe account, turn on Multibanco in your Stripe Dashboard’s payment method settings, and sell in euros. Cornerrr’s Stripe Checkout then offers it to eligible customers in Portugal. It also helps to switch on Multibanco payment instruction emails in Stripe’s email settings.

When is a Multibanco order confirmed?

When the customer pays the voucher and the money reaches Stripe, which can take several days. Until then the order is pending in Cornerrr, so don’t ship yet. If the voucher expires unpaid, Stripe waits up to four more days for a late bank transfer; then the payment fails, the order is marked unpaid and you get an email.

Does a pending Multibanco order hold my stock?

No. Cornerrr lowers stock when an order is paid, so a one-of-a-kind item can still be bought by someone else while a voucher waits. For unique pieces, say on the product page that the first completed payment secures the item.

Can I use Multibanco for subscriptions?

No. A Multibanco voucher is paid by hand each time, and Stripe’s Checkout takes it for one-time orders only. Portuguese subscribers on a Growth plan subscription can pay by card or SEPA Direct Debit.

What if a customer pays after the voucher expired?

Stripe refunds money paid to an expired or cancelled voucher automatically, so the customer isn’t left out of pocket. They can then place the order again.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
