What is TWINT?

TWINT is Switzerland’s mobile payment app. Customers use a TWINT app, often their own bank’s version of it, and approve each payment there, either by opening the app from their phone or by scanning a QR code on a computer. Stripe tells you at once whether the payment worked. TWINT takes Swiss francs only.

How your customers pay

  1. Choose TWINT at checkout

On your Stripe checkout, with prices in Swiss francs, the customer selects TWINT.

  2. Open the app or scan

On a phone, they are sent to their TWINT app. On a laptop, they scan the QR code on the screen with it.

  3. Approve the amount

They check the amount and your business name in the app and confirm the payment.

  4. Paid at once

Stripe confirms the payment immediately, Cornerrr marks the order paid and the customer gets the confirmation email.

Why offer it

Why businesses take TWINT

  • The Swiss way to pay

People in Switzerland use TWINT to pay friends, shops and webshops, so seeing it at checkout makes a shop from anywhere feel local.

  • Instant confirmation

You know right away whether a TWINT payment succeeded, so you can ship or confirm a booking request without waiting.

  • Rare disputes

Customers can only dispute a TWINT payment by complaining to their bank, and Stripe reports that this happens very rarely.

  • Refunds in minutes

You can refund all or part of a payment for up to 180 days, and refunds usually complete within a few minutes.

Set up

Turn on TWINT in three steps.

  1. Connect your Stripe account

Link the Stripe account you already have, or create one in a few minutes from Cornerrr. Payments go straight to it; Cornerrr adds no transaction fee.

  2. Turn the method on in Stripe

In your Stripe Dashboard, open the payment method settings and turn it on. Stripe may ask a few questions about your business first.

  3. It shows at checkout

Your Cornerrr checkout is Stripe Checkout, so customers who can use the method see it automatically when their country and your currency match.

Questions

Good to know

What does my website need before TWINT is approved?

TWINT asks for a live website that isn’t password protected or marked “coming soon”, with your company name and legal form (or your full name as a sole trader), full address and an email or phone number in your legal notice or terms. If you sell physical goods, Switzerland must be a shipping destination and prices must be in Swiss francs by checkout.

How do I turn on TWINT with Cornerrr?

Put your website live (any paid plan), add a legal notice page with those details, and add Switzerland to your shipping countries if you ship. Then, with your Stripe account connected, request TWINT in your Stripe Dashboard’s payment method settings. It stays pending until Stripe has checked the requirements; after that, Cornerrr’s Stripe Checkout shows TWINT to eligible customers on orders in Swiss francs.

Can I take TWINT if my business isn’t in Switzerland?

Yes, if your Stripe account is in Switzerland, the UK or the European Economic Area, or in Gibraltar, Monaco or San Marino. The order must be in Swiss francs: either set your store’s currency to francs, or on the Pro plan add franc prices shown on their own web address.

Can Swiss customers pay a subscription with TWINT?

Treat TWINT as a method for one-time orders for now. Stripe has begun to support TWINT for recurring payments, where the customer approves future charges in the app, but that support is still new, so keep cards switched on for your Growth plan subscriptions so every subscriber has a way to pay.

How long do I have to refund a TWINT payment?

Up to 180 days after the payment, in full or in part, and you can send several partial refunds. They usually complete within a few minutes.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
