What is EPS?

EPS is Austria’s online bank payment. The customer picks their bank, signs in to online banking and approves the payment there, and Stripe learns right away whether it succeeded. Stripe notes that all Austrian banks support EPS and that most Austrian online shops accept it.

How your customers pay

  1. Pick EPS and a bank

At your Stripe checkout the customer selects EPS, then chooses their bank from the list.

  2. Sign in to the bank

They are sent to their bank’s login page and sign in the way they always do.

  3. Approve with the bank’s own check

They confirm with whatever their bank uses, such as its app or a one-time code, within one hour of starting.

  4. See the result

They see straight away whether it worked and can return to your website, where Cornerrr shows the order as paid.

Why offer it

Why businesses take EPS

  • Every Austrian bank

Because all Austrian banks support EPS, almost any customer in Austria with online banking can use it, with or without a credit card.

  • Paid before you pack

The money is confirmed at once, so you don’t wait for a customer’s manual transfer before you send the order.

  • No chargebacks

Customers approve inside their bank, so EPS has no chargeback process. An unhappy customer contacts you, and you can refund.

  • Good for business buyers too

Stripe allows EPS for business-to-business sales as well as consumer sales, useful for trade orders from Austrian companies.

Set up

Turn on EPS in three steps.

  1. Connect your Stripe account

Link the Stripe account you already have, or create one in a few minutes from Cornerrr. Payments go straight to it; Cornerrr adds no transaction fee.

  2. Turn the method on in Stripe

In your Stripe Dashboard, open the payment method settings and turn it on. Stripe may ask a few questions about your business first.

  3. It shows at checkout

Your Cornerrr checkout is Stripe Checkout, so customers who can use the method see it automatically when their country and your currency match.

Questions

Good to know

How do I accept EPS payments with Cornerrr?

Connect your Stripe account, turn on EPS in your Stripe Dashboard’s payment method settings, and keep your store’s currency in euros. Cornerrr’s Stripe Checkout then offers EPS automatically to eligible customers in Austria.

Can I use EPS for subscriptions?

No. EPS is a one-time bank payment, and Stripe’s Checkout doesn’t take it for subscriptions. Austrian subscribers on a Growth plan subscription can pay by card or SEPA Direct Debit instead.

How long do EPS refunds take?

Usually one to three days, depending on the bank. You can refund in full or in part for up to 180 days; the money arrives as a separate credit, not as a reversal, so tell the customer it’s on its way.

Do I need an Austrian business to offer EPS?

No. Stripe accounts in the EU, the UK, Switzerland, the US and several other countries can accept EPS, as long as the customer is in Austria and pays in euros.

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You describe your business in your own words and Cornerrr builds the website. Afterwards you change things by clicking, or by asking the assistant in plain words.

How much does it cost?

Building and previewing your website is free, with no card needed. To go live and take payments, choose a plan from $19 a month. Every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is needed to start it.
